We all make these sorts of mistakes. I accidentally bought something with palm oil in it recently because i knew the item was vegan and didn't bother to read any further. Now Im going to be even more careful about reading ingredient lists. Simply learn from your mistake. Don't beat yourself up...
I just turned 40, and went veg back in 1995, and vegan two years ago and my parents don't approve at all. They think I'm crazy. Your family will usually be the hardest to convince. But don't let this get to you, as it's not about you, it's about them.
I know the feeling of isolation that you are experiencing. I got my husband to go vegan, but he's not interested in hearing about animal rights or the details I know about the animal agriculture industry. That's why I'm here online in this virtual vegan community.
There are vegan sources of lactic acid, but unless the package states the item is vegan somewhere, or says on the ingredients list that the lactic acid comes from a vegan source I'd probably assume it came from an animal source.

You're welcome @Trende . What's funny is that I had that same discussion with my husband when we were at the sushi restaraunt. I grew up eating fairly authentic sushi and was eating sashimi as a toddler so it was quite challenging for me to enjoy veg sushi for a while. But for the last decade I...
I'd recommend swapping Lobster for a less over used typeface. Perhaps try Thirsty Script. It's similar in style and legible, but not over used. http://www.dafont.com/thirsty-script.font
Simply put I'm vegan for the animals first, and my health second. I went vegetarian back in 1995, and toyed with veganism on and off from 2007 - 2015. I went completely vegan two years ago in 2015.
I highly recommend two cookbooks for you- The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick- Goudrou, and Have Your Cake and Vegan Too by Chris Colecheck. All my best cakes have come from recipes out of the second cookbook. VegWeb has many good cake recipies too along with VeganBaking.net
I battled depression for a little over a decade. Going vegetarian didn't help, nor did going vegan 15 years later. I notice lots of things affect my body, and my health, but rarely my moods. Good luck overcoming your depression. I know you can do it, I did.
