There are plenty of unhealthy people that don't eat meat. I don't think it is a question of health so much as a question of personal ethics. You can eat healthy on various different diet choices.
Tell them that you don't eat humans either:p. Sorry, I couldn't resist. No, seriously some people will go to great lengths to guilt or challenge you into doing things their way. Don't it get to you.
Making friends solely by dietary choices seems like a great way to isolate yourself. That is just how I see it though. It isn't usually the first thing I think about when meeting new people and I certainly wouldn't seek to exclude people over it.
I am frustrated by people that feel the need to impose their diet on others. One of my sisters decided to remove meat from her diet when we were young and still at home. Nobody objected or tried to dissuade her yet she felt the need to try and force her choice on the rest of the family and it...
@Michelle you would be shocked and amazed by the sheer volume of wasted food (all types) in food production facilities. It easily dwarfs what makes it to peoples plates.
People that are vegan for moral or ethical reasons might have a problem feeding children meat. Now if they choose to eat it when they are old enough to decide that is different.
We have 2 cats, a dog, a parakeet, and a hamster. They are part of the family. They are more like children that don't grow up then pets to us. I talk to my cat just as I would to anyone else for that matter.
I think kids should be brought up eating what you eat. When they get a bit older let it be their choice. Provide them with information so that they can make an educated decision.
Salmonella is carried on vegetables and fruits as well unfortunately. I wash anything I buy. I used to work for a place that handled large volumes of fruits and vegetables to go into a variety of products. Salmonella & Listeria were two of the major food-borne illnesses we tried to prevent.
Interesting topic. I'm fairly certain my wife would never go for the dietary change. If I had switched and I was single I'm not sure where I would sit with this to be honest.
Sodium content on many meat replacements is quite high. I am careful about my sodium intake. I personally eat vegetables because they taste like vegetables but everybody is different.
I have considered a vegetarian diet at times. Protein actually is an issue for those of us that need it balance the effect of carbohydrates. Protein consumption with carbohydrates helps blood sugar levels in my own experience.
It is interesting to see the differentiation drawn by both groups coming from either health or ethical considerations. It seems to me that many but not all of the people that are coming from an ethical perspective fall in the vegan camp.
