Physical Exercise Biking!

I used to cycle when I was a tiny tot in the UK. I loved my bike and used to cycle everywhere.

Overhere I did try it out but had to stop as it is too dangerous. There are no lanes for cyclists where I live so that is the end of my biking days !

^^ That's too bad. I wish more cities were bike friendly. Where I live, bike lanes have only recently appeared thanks to a couple of different volunteer groups that pushed for it. I remember when I was in Holland there were soooo many bikes! I wish we had that sort of culture here.

When I visited Vancouver Island I used to cycle and it was very safe. Drivers were very cautious and used to overtake me very carefully leaving plenty of room for me to feel safe.
I used to wear a helmut which also made me confident to cycle.

I've just bought a bike! Took it out on my 2nd trip today, about 6 miles round on roads and a park. I'm enjoying it so far. The last time I went cycling I was about 15, its partly easier now because I drive - so I can judge the road better. However, driving has also made me realise what assholes a lot of other drivers are. Today I encountered a cycle lane which cars had parked across, and then tried to overtake a traffic jam but couldnt because the cars were sooo close to the kerb. I know that a lot of cylists are assholes too though, the amount that just don't look when turning (lucky I do). Blergh. Agree that having a helmet gives me more confidence. I want to get a little rear view mirror so I can see what's behind me.

my ultimate goal would be able to cycle to work (8 miles each way) but unfortunately there are no cycle lanes and its all 50mph roads and non-traffic controlled roundabouts. So I don't think itll happen. I love the freedom of cycling. Today I went to meet a friend in town. I didn't have to worry about train times, keeping money for the car park, traffic jams, etc. Just tie it up and go!

I took my bicycle out for a ride yesterday, for the first time in quite a while, to go to town and get some groceries. There was a lot of headwind on the way there, so despite it being mostly downhill it was a bit of work, and it doesn't help that the bicycle is old and the gears make funny noises and don't work properly. I took a different route back and went at a slower pace since it was uphill and I had a backpack full of groceries. That was quite enjoyable actually. When I got home I wan't all that tired like I had thought. I suppose that meant I should have gone at a faster pace. Oh well :p

I too love the freedom of cycling, not having to sell my kidneys for a bus ticket, waiting forever for that stupid bus etc.

I love to bike, too, but it's been a while since I did it regularly. I did just go with my dad on Sunday (I used his old bike, as mine needs fixing). It's also not really safe to try to ride where I live because the traffic is wretched and there are few bike lanes. There is a vehicle-free trail in my state that follows old railroad tracks, but I need to get a bike rack for my car first, though.

Anyone else bike?

For the last year I've gotten up early every Saturday morning to ride (using the cardio trainer application for my cell phone). I do a 10 mile loop and really enjoy it. I started accessorizing my Schwinn mountain bike to make the ride a bit more comfortable by putting on custom handle bar extensions and such but a couple weeks ago I got a 1992 GT Tequesta Mountain Bike that went for $500 new (in 1992) for $30. It needed some love but I took it out last Saturday and am excited about accessorizing it now.:bd:
