I've never been an Instagram/TikTok person, but I decided to give BlueSky a try. Vegans are really active there. Posting articles on various animal rights organizations, new films, and lots of info. It has been a very good experience for me.

I never did IG or TikTok, either, just mostly FB. I haven't decided whether to try BlueSky.

Corporate-owned social media is all about selling your data, can be used to control information and narratives via The Algorithm, and now with the Musk presidency can also be a tool to control other nations. (As seen with Musk's intervention into UK and German politics recently.) The social media barons of today are just the logical next iteration of the traditional news media barons of yesteryear, a'la Rupert Murdoch.

So, no thank you.

I deleted my X account recently (after 2 years of disuse). I would do the same with my Meta accounts but unfortunately I depend on them to stay in touch with friends and family.

However, I have been enjoying Mastodon, and I'd like to recommend that to anyone else who's fed up with corporate-owned social media and The Algorithm. There's a bit of a threshold compared to more conventional social media as you need to choose an instance to sign up with, and then actively search for accounts and hashtags to follow. But totally worth the effort.

I would delete FB, but like you, it's how I keep in touch with friends and family. It's frustrating. I did have Twitter briefly, but I didn't use it much and I deleted the account before it switched to X.

That's interesting to hear. I only have Facebook but it feels to me that vegan advocacy is very minimal in that channel. If anything it's dominated by anti-vegan sentiment. I don't think I'll sign up to X though. I do occasionally observe some interesting vegan advocacy in Quora and Reddit but I don't actively follow either.

Mastodon?

I guess if your goal is reach and advocacy, then you might need to be wherever there are lots of users/people, which means corporate-owned social media.

Mastodon is quite small comparatively.

I was really surprised by the number of vegans on BlueSky. And they are really active on the board. Lots of replies and interaction between the vegans.

I've never been on any of the platforms, but I've been pretty happy there.

I opt for Mastodon because it's totally decentralized: there are many instances - with local house rules - to choose from and you can talk to many FOSS people there. However, I find social media to be only a little more than online time-wasting so I am not that active.

Have just checked BlueSky - seems to be slightly suspicious to me.
