Chipotle switches to vegan pinto beans (maybe?)

Apparently there was a campaign to make make Chipotle change the recipe on change.org:
http://www.change.org/petitions/chipotle-stop-using-bacon-in-your-pinto-beans

And then several people (non-vegetarian non-pork eaters, I guess mainly Jews) were upset when they found out there was bacon in the beans:
BERKELEY, Calif. — Chipotle said it would change its menu after customers found out about a secret ingredient, bacon, lurking in some of its beans. At a Chipotle restaurant on Telegraph Avenue near the UC Berkeley campus numerous people were surprised to hear that the restaurant’s beans were not only not vegetarian, they're not kosher.
Chipotle Changes Menu After Secret Ingredient Revealed (KVTU.com, 19. Aug. 2011)

So it seems a bit of consumer activism is starting to pay off!

I saw someone on Facebook mention that they had changed their recipe, I hope it's true. Their website still says there's bacon in the pinto beans though.

Hmm....Just saw someone complain on Chipotle's Facebook page about the bacon being removed, and Chipotle told them to try the carnitas. Maybe it is true. :)

I'll believe it when Chipotle changes their website and signage.

Before I was vegetarian I sometimes had the pinto beans but couldn't taste bacon, even though I knew they were cooked with bacon. I have always preferred the black beans, but would be happy if they made the pinto beans vegetarian too, regardless of the reasons.

The obsession with bacon boggles my mind. I didn't even like it that much when I used to eat meat.

I actually prefer pinto beans to black beans (but I'll eat black beans when they're offered to me). Back in June my sister and I were shopping at the mall and we stopped at the food court and decided to get a late dinner from Chipotle. I'd never eaten anything from Chipotle before, so when I asked for the pinto beans, my sister quickly said that the pinto beans contained bacon. So I ordered the black beans instead. Nobody behind the counter volunteered that information, it was my sister (a pescetarian) who knew about it. It would certainly be nice to have a choice, though.

I prefer refried beans, doesn't matter if it's pinto or black beans. I usually don't get a lot on mine because I don't like them whole beans on a burrito.

I prefer black beans, but I do always add a splash of liquid smoke to my beans (both pinto, kidney, and black beans) whenever I make them . I love that hickory smoked flavor it adds.

I'm glad they finally got rid of the bacon. I just wish they had done this years ago. Now to bring the tofu to all their locations.
