The UK's Independence Party (UKIP) has recently introduced a "fruitcake test" to block unsuitable characters who might embarrass the party from being elected. This comes after one of their representatives in the EU parliament made the infamous "bongo bongo land" comment regarding development aid to some African(?) country.
Does this sound like a good idea? Should all political parties introduce similar measures? Would it make politics more boring than it already is? Would such streamlining pose a democratic problem in that some people (i.e. fruitcake people) are denied opportunities simply because of their personality?

Is this what the test would look like?
