Didn't know that this was a thing until Veganuary decided to celebrate World Milk Day as a day to celebrate plant milks.

According to Veganuary

On World Milk Day, we're celebrating the rise and rise of plant milks

Plant-based alternatives to dairy milk are enjoying an unstoppable rise:
  • Oatly increased production by 1,250% between 2017 & 2018. ?
  • Across the UK, Alpro estimates that 21 million plant-based coffee drinks are now being served each week. ☕
  • Mintel research shows sales of plant milk growing significantly - 30% between 2015 & 2017 in the UK. (Sales of traditional milk only rose 5% in the same period.) ?
What's behind the rise?

Clearly demand is growing. It's not just that lots of people are going vegan (hurrah!); many non-vegans are reducing the amount of dairy they regularly consume too.

And we can think of a few good reasons why...
  • Cows' milk has been linked to all kinds of nasty things: higher cholesterol, acne and ovarian cancer.
  • Plant milk is better for the planet. To make 1 litre of cow's milk you need 1,050 litres of water. To make 1 litre of soya milk you need just 297 litres of water.
  • Plant milk is better for cows! On dairy farms, cows are separated from their calves. Often, the calves are taken away and shot at birth, just so humans can have their milk instead.

Do you have a link for that that you quoted? I tried searching for "world milk day" on the Veganuary website and nothing came up...

That's amazing!

And here I was gonna celebrate racial diversity because I thought it was a new MLK day... We should get congress to ban the use of the word "milk" as it can be confused with MLK. They can call cows' milk "Bovine Body Fluids" to prevent consumer confusion.
