BREAKING: Hostages held in Sydney cafe as gunmen force patrons to hold Islamic flag in window

That is some scary ****.

How feasible would it be for such countries as Australia and the US to pass a law saying that anyone who leaves to fight with the jihadists would automatically lose their citizenship and would be detained if they returned to their home country? Would that not discourage people from actually going to fight in the first place? Or would it simply force them to become home-grown terrorists without fighting with the jihadists?

The burden of proof required for such things is so high I don't think it would make much difference. There are already a lot of suspects on watch lists, but until they commit a crime there's nothing we can do. Even traveling isn't enough, and proving what someone does after they leave our borders is near impossible. In Afghanistan, half the time we couldn't even get the guys convicted after taking them straight from the fire fight into custody. One day they try to kill us, two weeks later they're out due to lack of evidence. The guy who started ISIS was one of those. In any case, if people are that adamant about fighting they're gonna do it either way.

On the flip side, there are volunteers going to fight with the Kurds ranging from German and Norwegian biker gangs to vets from the US and Canada joining under Canada's 1st North American Expeditionary Force, created (legally) specifically for that purpose.

There's a war raging across the globe whether the majority, tucked away in its bubble, acknowledges it or not. No law can change that.

I only just heard about this a few hours ago but just saw that the hostage-taker and one hostage have died but the other hostages have been rescued. They must have been so frightened.
