I've seen a rise in popularity in such things as K-cups, those small containers that are placed into a brewing machine to make individual amounts of coffee and tea and other beverages. I believe the reason is that there are more single people than ever before, and buying, making and drinking a large amount seem pointless when you're making it just for yourself. They are also popular at places of work, where making a large pot of coffee seems wasteful when there are employees who probably don't want it. I can understand the reasoning there.

But there is also the introduction of individual packs or "pods" of laundry detergent, which seems ridiculous to me when, for decades, everyone, including single people, managed quite nicely with a box of detergent, or a bottle when one prefers gel or liquid detergent. Other than making it easier to take with you to a laundromat, I fail to see why individual packs of detergent are necessary. One can buy detergent at the laundromat, or put a certain quantity of powder detergent in a jar or can to take with you. I believe these detergent "pods" are nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

I also believe that such individual packs are ultimately wasteful and harmful to the environment because they create more waste than necessary. Not everyone is conscientious about recycling, or live in an area where recycling is available. In addition, I'm concerned that these individual containers are not made from recyclable materials, even if one has access to a recycling program and is willing to follow through on recycling these containers.

Is it possible to have hot beverages such as coffee and tea in small individual amounts without producing extra waste with K-cups?

You can get one of these and fill it with your own ground coffee.

I have a Senseo machine and the pods these are what the pods look like...more like a tea bag, no plastic. And less expensive than kcups. I love it. It also has the ability to use your own coffee grinds.

Tea bags; Compostable and the boxes they come in are recyclable.

Coffee: I have an espresso machine that makes single cups from 'loose' ground coffee. The grounds are compostable and its around 50 cups to one non recyclable piece of vacuum packing.

The purpose of these 'POD' things, apart from ripping off those who are both incredibly lazy and incredibly dim-witted, totaly evades me.

If we have any incredibly lazy dim-wits reading then please buy your PODs from my website! :D

My sister (she's 26) does not know how to make drip coffee because of k-cups. So they're causing damage in more areas than the environment. Knowing how to make drip coffee is a basic (1st world) human need!!

I love my drip coffee maker and I make awesome coffee but for times when I'm in a hurry or just don't want to wait, I love my Senseo.
