An investigation by The Hollywood Reporter alleges that the American Humane Association has tried to cover up instances of animal abuse and deaths on Hollywood sets. Melissa Block talks with Gary Baum, a senior writer for the magazine who reported the story.

Here's the actual article (WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES):

A very compelling story. I've known that they were crooked, but this is ridiculous.

I read that yesterday. Horrible yet not totally shocking. I always feel uncomfortable watching movies that have animals in some scenes because I've always been skeptical about the "humane" treatment they get on the set.

Ditto. Unless a film uses entirely CGI animals, I can't settle back and enjoy watching it because I always have my doubts about their safety or willingness to perform certain scenes.

In the same way that they have selectively bred cats and dogs to be perfectly happy being shut indoors all day ...

(I'm not totaly convinced on that one no matter how many times I hear it is so from working cat and dog owners, btw)

Could they not selectively breed animals who actualy enjoy performing in front of a camera?
