Low on Cash, Romney Tries to Rally Donors for Final Phase

I suspect that at this point, he probably doesn't consider it to be a wise investment of his cash.

Perot was a true believer. I don't know that Romney believes in much of anything.

But I suspect your question was tongue in cheek. :D

I'm confused by this. Isn't Romney a billionair? Can't he fund his own campaign like Ross Perrot did?
I read his net worth is $200 million. Not enough for a campaign if he wants to keep up his family's lifestyle. It is ridiculous how much money is flung around in these campaigns. I live in a swing state, and the tv ads, billboards, and newspaper ads, not to mention the personal appearances, are everywhere. I am getting so sick of seeing those two, I just want it to be over.

Yea, I'm a swing stater myself. I think Romney has visited the same farm in my area three or four times now. Getting tired of the traffic slowdown. Needless to say, I don't think I'll ever give Scamman Farm my business ever again. :)

Oh, BTW, what about all the money he has in his overseas accounts? must be pretty substantial for him to go through the trouble of "hiding" it. :)

It isn't hiding the money, it is legal. Rich people often use this offshore strategy to reduce tax liability. I remember when John Kerry was running, he had similar off-shore blind trust accounts. He was a billionaire at the time.

Could you cite a source? The only thing I can find (other than rumors from the right) is that he invested $25,000-$30,000 in a couple of offshore companies: http://www.boston.com/globe/nation/packages/kerry/images/day5/tax1.htm
I can't find a source, the only thing that comes up is Kerry's whole yacht tax scandal. I remember republicans complaining about offshore investments during his run, and also that his wife Teresa Heinz didn't release her tax returns.

I wasn't trying to argue with you :) - I just didn't remember (and I thought I would have), so I did the search, and the $25,000-$30,000 investment in an offshore company was all I could find.

As for Teresa Heinz - as you know, she came into that marriage with her own fortune, she and Kerry file separately, and he has no reponsibility for what she does or doesn't pay. Cindy and John McCain also file separately, and Cindy, just like Teresa Heinz, made public a summary of one year of her returns. http://factcheck.org/2012/07/romney-and-the-tax-return-precedent/

Yeah, John Kerry berthed his yacht in a neighboring state to take advantage of the lower property taxes in that state. Perfectly legal, as is the Romneys deducting the costs of a very expensive Olympic level dressage horse as a medical expense because riding is therapeutic for Mrs. Romney.

Kerry paid Massachusetts half a million dollars in back taxes for berthing the boat in Rhode Island, so it must have been at least something that looked bad. It is a special state tax in Massachusetts on really expensive boats that RI doesn't have.

Boy, was there some shady stuff about members of congress on both sides of the aisle making scads of money on what looks like insider trading to me.

Mrs Romney has ms, and horseback riding has proven a successful therapy. In my town, we have a public park with therapy horses for people with multiple sclerosis, autism, etc.

I really hate taking politics, but when only one side is represented, I feel like it is unbalanced. I'm a registered democrat since 1976, btw. I don't like either candidate, they are both war mongers imo.

Sure it looked bad, but it was perfectly legal.

I know Mrs. Romney has MS, and I also know that riding is therapeutic for that. The point is, it doesn't take a super expensive Olympic level horse to provide that therapy - an adopted rescue horse would provide the same benefit. But she can afford the expensive indulgence, and she can take a deduction for it well into the five figures - perfectly legal, just as Kerry's yacht was legal.

I don't have an issue with either*, other than both were idiots for failing to see how their actions would be perceived by many.

*Other than the extent to which the deck, including the Internal Revenue Code, is stacked in favor of the wealthy - the deduction for a therapy horse should be limited to something reasonable. Shopping around for cheaper places to stow one's expensive personal property could also be remedied easily.

I do strongly disagree with you if you think that the likelihood of us becoming embroiled in another war is the same under Obama and Romney.
