I'm thinking Merkel is probably considered too liberal on immigration within her own party, the CDU, i.e. Christian Democrats, which is Germany's conservative party. Under Merkel's leadership, Germany took in more than a million refugees during the so-called refugee crisis. With the ascent of AfD, the "alternative for Germany" party, the German political landscape has been tilted further to the right.
