A nun who gave birth to a baby boy in the central Italian city of Rieti, said she had no idea she was pregnant, local media report.

The 31-year-old was rushed to hospital with abdominal pains, which she thought were stomach cramps.

The young mother, who is originally from El Salvador, reportedly named her newborn Francis after the current Pope.

It's not that unusual for a girl or woman to be unaware that she's pregnant until she gives birth. There are still quite a few people who are either very sheltered or very ignorant.

I've heard that before. But frankly, I don't see how that's possible! I mean, I can see how you might not know for the first few months, but after that, at least in my experience, the baby makes him/herself quite well known!

Some people don't show in the same way, as well, I've heard. They just seem like they might have put on a little weight, or if they were already a bit overweight it's very hard to see, if the baby is situated higher in the abdomen.

I know someone that this happened (supposedly) to. A young girl, years ago. She was a friend of my cousin. Her mom took her to the ER because she was having abdominal pain and she came home with a baby. Her mom had no idea her daughter was pregnant.

I read an article in a magazine about a woman who worked as a model and she didn't realise she was pregnant until she went into labour. They had a picture of her at a photo shoot two weeks before she gave birth and she wasn't showing at all.

This happened to a co-worker of mine. She was a bit overweight and didn't look pregnant at all. She felt the baby kicking , but she thought it was just gas. :fp: I really don't understand how she could confused the two. She realized she was pregnant a couple days before she went into labor though when she went to her doctor for her yearly visit.

I always wonder about the health of the babies in these situations due to the lack of prenatal vitamins and the mothers doing potentially hazardous things (drinking, drugs, smoking, etc) during their pregnancy .

I wonder if this nun got pregnant before she joined the convent or while she was there. I also wonder if she really did know she was pregnant but feared the consequences if she were to reveal it.

Maybe, just maybe, and isolated nun in Italy might not know...

But an American women who has had kids before. Sorry, no, I don't believe it.

"Gee my period's stopped for several months, what could that possibly mean".

And even if you didn't know, a doctor would....

I don't doubt that she went a whole pregnancy not knowing she was pregnant. But she's a Roman Catholic nun, right? Aren't they supposed to take a vow of chastity? So how did she get pregnant in the first place? I'm sure she must have been there when THAT happened.

And this makes me think of the scene in Woody Allen's 1973 movie Sleeper, set 200 years in the future. In that scene, the main character, played by Woody, is on the run from the authorities, hides in a cave, discovers an old newspaper, and reads one of the headlines: "Pope's wife gives birth to twins" :p

Yea that, and chocolate and candy is good for you... That was a great movie!

There is a whole show on that on the Discovery Health network. I think it is the scariest show ever.

This show is enough to give one nightmares. Well at least give me nightmares. Some of them are just downright stupid on how pregnancy happens, but ones like the lady who had had a tubal years before, and was at an age when it really should be hard to get pregnant, yet pregnant she was . . . *shudder*

In one episode the man had had a vasectomy and had had the followup tests which showed it worked, then surprise!

It all makes me feel like getting spayed at the low-cost animal clinic.

Lots of women have irregular periods and will miss for several months. I've known 2 women who didn't know they were pregnant until they were very far along. One had irregular periods her whole life and was even told she likely would never get pregnant.

That's why I wonder if she got pregnant before or after she took her vows. I can see not knowing, but I can also see a nun trying to hide a pregnancy in fear of what would happen if the news got out.

My cousin has an eating disorder and she missed her period for a couple of years I think, so she didn't realise she was pregnant for the first few months.

 It's not just you, I think that would be one of the most terrifying things that could happen to me!

Definitely. Also contraception can makes womens periods irregular too, which means irregular periods plus the assumption that you wont be pregnant because you're on contraception. When I was using a hormonal implant I had very irregular periods, I missed four, maybe five, months before it occurred to me that I should take a pregnancy test on the off-chance I'd got pregnant whilst on contraception (I wasn't pregnant as it happens, but I could have been, and not even considered it for months, which is a scary thought).

Our sex education teacher told us about a girl at our school who claimed she didn't know she was pregnant until she'd given birth in her bedroom. The teacher wasn't sure how true that was (well, nobody but the girl would know for certain) but apparently she didn't show at all, despite being a slim girl. I would imagine it would be a terrifying thing to happen, you'd be completely unprepared. Unprepared doesn't even cover it. It would be terrifying and confusing to one day not know you're pregnant, and the next to be giving birth and having a child.

it happened around my area. Woman goes to bed with stomach ache, hears baby crying....so the paper said.
