“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God,” Mourdock said at a debate. “And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...ended-for-babies-to-result-from-rape/?hpid=z3

In comments first reported by WGN radio, Walsh argued that "with modern technology and science, you can't find one instance" in which an abortion would be needed to save a woman's life. "There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing," he said following a debate with his Democratic rival Tammy Duckworth. http://www.wgnradio.com/news/top/ch...on-medicare-abortion-20121018,0,4118256.story

I read about this. Head, meet desk.

Seems like these days there's way more old men crawling out of the woodwork with virtually zero knowledge of reproductive issues, trying to tell the world how ovaries ought to work...

It's funny. I was reading about Gothardism (think quiverfull movement/duggars) this morning. I wonder if these people are followers?

(Ah, the things you will spend hours chasing down the google hole when you are avoiding writing a paper).

And of course, Akin may still win the Missouri Senate race, even after this: “legitimate rape,” he told a TV interviewer, rarely results in pregnancy because a woman’s body can shut down and prevent conception. http://www.thedailybeast.com/newswe...lazarus-rise-in-the-missouri-senate-race.html

This was my favourite response to that:

The "rape thing":

Asked at a campaign fundraiser whether he supports abortion rights in some situations, Koster replied that he only supports abortion in cases where a woman's life is in danger.

"Incest is so rare, I mean, it's so rare," he said. "But the rape thing-- you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept the child, gave it up for adoption, and she doesn't regret it."

He added, "On the rape thing, it's like, how does putting more violence onto a woman's body and taking the life of an innocent child that's a consequence of this crime -- how does that make it better? You know what I mean?"

I'm sorry, but anyone who speaks of rape in such terms should have his head dunked in a vat of excrement. And incest is "so rare"?!?!

Wtf with "the rape thing"???

As for incest, research studies have yielded estimates of anywhere from 10 to 20% of the general population.

Idiot.

Wow...Im overcome by all the stupid...
Government types like to quote random facts to make their argument seem more valid, 38% of all people know that!

Yes, incest is not at all rare. A lot of children 'experiment' on relatives around their own age, usually siblings or cousins.

A lot of sexual abuse is also committed by older relatives.

10 to 20 percent?!?

I think that number is probably low. Most of the people I know IRL who were sexually abused were abused by a blood relative - fathers, uncles, cousins, brothers, grandfathers. IME, that's more common than sexual abuse by a step parent/ mother's boyfriend. I think it's under reported because there's so much pressure brought to bear to not *destroy* the family by reporting it.

If the GOP is so horrible towards women, then why are so many of them voting on that very party?

Because some women agree with them. Which they have a right to! *shock horror* Being a woman does not mean you have to have the same opinions and beliefs as other women.
Just as nobody here is suggesting that all men have the same opinions as these men just because they happen to be the same sex.

Well, there are an awful lot of women who think that "feminism" is a dirty word. A lot of people stay in abusive relationships. People of both sexes eat too much, drink too much, don't exercise enough, and do a whole lot of things that aren't wise or in their own best interests.

I just googled and read about it. I never would have thought such a high number, so horrible. :(

I once had a 14 year old patient presenting in labor, and when I asked who the father was, she said she wasn't sure if it was her brother or her stepfather. :( Luckily they were both at the hospital, and the cops came and took them for questioning.

Not trying to jack the thread, sorry!

You're not jacking the thread. :)

I think it's worthwhile to bring these numbers to light, to raise people's awareness - these acts thrive in secrecy and denial.

Only if you by opinion mean "wanting to have your reproductive rights stolen away".

Or however it goes, I'm not 100% into American politics as of lately.

One difference is that your example affects oneself mostly, whilst politics is a issue for everyone.

Well, there are rarely much to "discuss" in a thread about GOP and pregnancy regardless.
