Roosevelt, Churchill quiet about Katyn massacre

Yes, I too think they had a pretty good idea, but chose to be allied with the USSR for almost purely strategic reasons. There was much scepticism and hostilities from western countries against the USSR and bolshevist communism ever since the revolution and right up to the start of WW2. And it wasn't long after WW2 ended before the former Allies found themselves in conflict yet again.

If Roosevelt knew of Stalin's crimes, why would he call him Uncle Joe? It may just be a sign of the kind of person Roosevelt was.

We have a history of allying ourselves with pretty awful regimes for strategic purposes.

Better to have Germany fighting a war on two fronts than us fighting a war on three or four fronts. It was strategically necessary. It's normal to talk **** about your enemies instead of your friends anyway. Do we not operate pretty much the same way even as individuals? And in this case I don't think they were under any delusions as to what our post WWII relationships would be like.

Especially considering the Soviets initially invaded Poland, and had an agreement with the Nazis about how to divide it.

Russia still had Germany to worry about regardless of what the Allies said. Germany would still be fighting on two fronts. Just a few comments from the government acknowledging the Russians did the crime doesn't change the war at all.
