My friends, we are living in the latter days! On December 21st the Antichrist will reveal himself. (Or herself?) So says the Internet. The Mayans, those noble savages, somehow got this one thing right. The world will be cast into darkness, and the righteous will be taken up.

Now, speculation is running wild on the Internet. Who is the Antichrist? Many fingers are pointing at President Obama. However:

The name "antichrist" is only found in 1 John 2:18, 2:22, 4:3, and 2 John 7. The Apostle John was the only Bible writer to use the name antichrist. Studying these verses, we learn that many antichrists (false teachers) will appear between the time of Christ's first and Second Coming, but there will be one great antichrist who will rise to power during the end times, or "last hour," as 1 John phrases it. He will deny that Jesus is the Christ. He will deny both God the Father and God the Son. He will be a liar and a deceiver.

... and Obama claims to be a Christian, so maybe that gets him off the hook. If the above is true, it would seem likely the Antichrist is an atheist!?

I'd be interested if someone more knowledgeable could cast some light on this matter.

Well, growing up in a pretty fundamental setting, the antichrist was always a vague figure. But he would align himself with satan, and since atheists don't believe in god, they automatically don't believe in the devil either. Although, to many fundamentalists, atheists and devil worshipers are the same thing, so . And of course, many protestants - at least in the South, believe that the Pope is the antichrist.

What we were told to fear, was the mark of the beast. It would mark the unbelievers, and it would be something everyone would want to have. Kinda like the iphone. In fact, many (most? the vast majority?) Adventists believe that it will be some fancy new technilogical advancement, like a chip in your hand - you know like those chips they put in credit cards now, but it would be placed on your person, so the credit industry/government/satan could keep track of you.

I'm not even shitting you, people actually believe this.
