So who here has read any of the Discworld books? What's your favourite book or series? Favourite character?

My favourite is the witches series and favourite character has to be Granny Weatherwax. :D

I'd say my favorite book is Reaper Man, but my favorite character is Samuel Vimes. I always have a soft spot for cynical goodhearted bastards

ME! I find it hard to choose a favorite, but I suppose I'll go with the Watch series. My favorite character is Vetinari.

I can definitely see Vetinari being a favorite. I always picture Alan Rickman when I try to see him in my mind.

I picture Vincent Price, personally. I'm easily influenced though, so maybe in subsequent re-readings I'll picture him a bit more "Gruberesque." :p

I never picture characters in books as actors. But I can see what you mean about Vetinari.

I almost forgot, as much as I love the witches series, Monstrous Regiment is actually my all-time favourite book.

Death is my favourite character <3 Haven't read any of the books in far too long, though.

Got my dad this for Christmas:

I tend to see Rickman because I read somewhere that he did Vetinari in one of the Discworld productions. I can't verify that, but it'd definitely be interesting.

I wanted to read them for years, having loved the computer games, but was overwhelmed as there's so many. So now I've decided to read them - but only if I find the books in second hand shops. So far I've read the first one (Colour of Magic) and own 3 and 4 but havent found two yet. haha. I found the first book quite boring, but I think thats because poor Pratchett had to describe this whole world to me.. that I already knew because I played the games. I like his writing style though and the actual story was good. Need to hurry up and find the 2nd!

You don't need to read them in publication order. You can treat them all as little series in their own right. You've got the Rincewind ones, the Watch/Sam Vimes ones, the Witches ones, the Death ones, Lipwig ones, then all the sort of standalone novels.
Yes they all link together but you can read them as separate series, if that makes sense? Like the first one I tried to read was the Colour of Magic but I hated it, so my brother persuaded me to read Reaper Man and Hogfather. Which I liked and then next one I picked up was Wyrd Sisters. I ******* loved it. So I just read the rest of the Witches books before I moved onto any of the others.

It can be a little bit confusing. For example, I read Monstrous Regiment (sort of standalone novel) before I read any Watch books. So I didn't know who Sam Vimes was or the other members of the Watch that have a small role in that book. But it didn't matter because it wasn't written in a way that meant you had to know who they were to understand the story so it was fine.

If you already know the world you'll be fine reading them in any order really. It's what I've done because I used to only buy them second hand so I read whatever I could get my hands on. (My brother used to have all of them up to Night Watch (as that was the most recently published one at the time) but they all got stolen. So I've been trying to rebuild the collection. I'm still missing quite a few. )
