I've read many claims regarding hundreds of thousands of German POW's being killed in Eisenhower's camps. I've also read multiple claims about the German civilian population being starved following World War 2. Going by my experience most humans don't think this happened despite having no evidence. People are more likely to believe an event happened if the media talks about it rather than one they don't. If factory farms, the crisis in the oceans, the population problem we're going through, and other problems that are ignored by the media were discussed much more frequently, do you think this would change anything? How much influence does the media with our minds?

What we see in the media definitely influences us, but at the same time we influence the media. They are a business, and the issues you mentioned don't tend to get good ratings. This is, in my opinion, largely because people don't like to hear about problems which are their own fault.

You think people want to hear about murder and war, two subjects very popular with the media? The news is very negative, and most people I know are turned off by that.

Disgusted, yes. But we're still going to tune into it. The reason is certainly debatable, but the statistics don't lie. When chaos happens, ratings go up. The media, as with any business, is very predictable. They're gonna go where the money is. And the viewers are predictable too, most of the time.

People don't want bad things to happen, but when they drive past a wreck on the highway and there are overturned cars and bodies all over the place, they're gonna stop and look at it even if what they see gives them nightmares.

I'm no exception. Yesterday when I saw news coming out of Buddhist monks in Burma participating I'm murderous acts which could potentially escalate into genocide I was pretty shocked. Naturally, I had to know more so I spent a while rummaging through various articles to learn about the situation.

I do realize that environmental concerns are extremely important, but they're also old news to me. Reruns. By this point most people are either acting on their concerns or ignoring them because they either don't care or don't like being reminded of their part in the problem. In either case, it doesn't draw significant viewer attention.

Nobody WANTS to hear about death, famine or cruelty. Doesnt mean its doesnt go on though. As sad as it is to hear I think knowing whats going on in the world is a good thing. Personally Id prefer knowing the truth to viewing the world through rosetinted glasses.
