Jury selection to begin in trial of James Holmes in Colorado theater massacre - LA Times

Points from the article:
1. Jury selection starts Tuesday, January 20th.
2. He could get the death penalty if proven sane.
3. The final selected jurors and alternates won't be seated until May.
4. The burden of proof in Colorado is on the prosecution to prove that he was sane at the time of the shooting.
5. Colorado doesn't execute anyone proven to be mentally ill.
6. The trial is expected to last much of the year.
7. Legal experts will be watching this trial since it's rare for the perpetrator of a mass shooting to survive the incident and be put on trial.
8. It has never been in doubt that Holmes was, indeed, the shooter.

It happens so often these days that I have a hard time remembering one from a few years ago. The media doesn't talk about him too much either.

The fact that this case is going to trial is all about politics and public perception. Although the guy may or may not qualify as "insane" for the very narrow purposes of criminal law defense, IMO it's about as clear as can be that he's severally mentally ill. Nevertheless, the prosecution refused to take the death penalty off the table for what can only be political/public perception reasons.

The media doesn't talk about him too much either.

I typed his name into the Google news search box and came up with 7.34 million hits.

I read the newspaper just about every day, go on the internet, and watch some TV as well. Just going by what sources I view, the name didn't sound familiar.
