Was it ever possible? When you have sociopaths whom you think may use them(Nazi Germany, Soviet Union) it makes some sense that a country would want them. However, if history had been different and there are no sociopaths, there's no need for them. Two examples:
1.If United States had stayed out of World War 1 completely(including American businesses that were aiding England and France) Germany likely wins the war. It's very possible that Hitler never becomes leader, and possibly no Soviet Union. No need for nuclear weapons.
2.If the United States fights Russia after defeating Germany, the United States likely wins the war easily. Again no need for nuclear weapons.
To answer my own question, I think it was possible.

Nah, I think we were destined to have nuclear weapons. For one thing, the Russians still would have had a revolution, and the US would want to have nuclear weapons to keep the commies at bay.

Not if you believe this book. I believe Iran had a Democracy in the early 1950's that we got rid of(didn't like them apparently) so maybe they wouldn't be looking at nuclear weapons either with a different government. Many countries just simply want nuclear weapons to defend themselves from other countries that have them. If the strong militaries of the world had just simply agreed not to go this far, it is very possible today would look much different. At the very least there'd be a lot less.
