So, I've been having issues with the DVD player for a while.... It had belonged to Jer's late mother, he said he just wanted it to finally get some use.

And that it has. A LOT of use. It's been pretty grumpy the last few months, though... great difficulty reading certain (newer) DVDs... if I notice a disc doesn't read right away (I've learned what to watch & listen for), I eject it & try again, otherwise the player makes these scary noises or sounds like it's hurling the disc around inside. Recently I bought a laser lens cleaning disc, but it doesn't seem to have helped.... Did it make things worse?

The last two nights, I've been trying to play the same DVD... Better Call Saul, season three, disc one... brand-spanking new.... WILL. NOT. PLAY.

I rented it Monday night. After an hour of d*cking around with it, I gave up, called Family Video, & had a note made on my account. I brought the DVD back there last night & the gal put it in the disc repair machine.... Good to go, right?? HA!! More of the same... wouldn't read. So I called the store again, told them about it, and I now have a $4 credit to my account. Then I popped in a 2002 movie, bought used, badly scratched... of course it played with no problem whatsoever. o_O

Most likely, I just need to buy a new DVD player. But here's where the real weirdness kicks in.... Did some Googling & found this experience:

A few months I bought a "Laser Lens Cleaner" CD on a whim when I was at a DVD store. My DVD player hadn't experienced any difficulties up to that point, but since I'd had it for a couple of years I felt that I should stick a cleaner disc in it for routine maintenance. What could be the harm?

Bad move.

Now, when I put a new movie disc into my DVD player it has trouble recognizing the disc and doesn't take me to the initial menu. (ie the "Play Movie" or "Deleted Scenes" menu). "This disc cannot be played. Please check the disc."

Once it has recognized the disc, it stays recognized.

I would just buy a new DVD player, but I don't have the cash at the moment, and HERE'S THE REALLY WEIRD PART:

It's absolutely fine with playing my older DVDs, some of which are dilapidated ex-rental ones that I picked up for $5 from my local DVD rental store, others of which are DVDs that I've played dozens of times before.

But it won't recognize new DVDs that are in absolutely pristine condition.

I have a DVDoppelganger! :weird: LMAO

Maybe they refused to let her use the restroom, that's the only half logical explanation coming to my mind.
As one commenter put it, makes you really admire the composure and restraint of the Starbucks duo .. :D
