I'm planning to make some kind of nut roast as last year's meal was fabulous. I was inspired by Rose Elliot's nut roast recipe and it came out very tasty and moist. I also think that some cranberry sauce or compote would pair well with the nuts.

I'm also planning to make some mince pies and perhaps a christmas cake. I have ordered some enamel pie dishes and christmas moulds from Lakeland and will also be baking some festive pies and making chocolates.

I love nut roast. I'm not sure what I'm having for the main meal as a meat replacement yet. I was thinking of getting a Quorn roast for my husband if we aren't eating the same thing or just the VBites one for both of us. Vegan sausage rolls too or sausages wrapped in bacon.

I think I will try roasted brussels sprouts as I've never had them before, roast potatoes and parsnips, carrots roasted in maple syrup with onion gravy and lots of stuffing.:lick:

I've never had roast brussels. I usually just boil them and serve them with a drizzle of evo. I like their slightly bitter taste. In Sainsbury's they also sell them on a stalk so that they keep their freshness.

If I can find some fresh cranberries, I may make some compote.

The following recipe sounds nice :

Brussels with hazelnut & orange butter

My aforementioned thoughts about making sushi, or stuffed peppers- Im still thinking of ideas, not sure what i will do yet.

I usually either make a big lasagna or I make a nut roast- I make one I found which has many different things in it and it is a big job to put together, and I make accompanying gravy and basil pesto (as the recipe suggests) and there are always peas, potatos etc to go with it....

But this year I am doing a detox over that period so I am looking for something detox-y so I am thinking differently.

Both of your proposed menus sound so lovely and festive BTW...

It's easy to make festive food in a cold climate. I certainly like the taste and aroma of spice and citrus fruit during this season.

What food is on your No list as your are detoxing ?

Well I am sort of trying to stick to wholefoods... like perhaps stuff the peppers with brown rice or millet..

or have sushi made of short grain brown rice and a wide centre of vegetables and less rice... if that makes sense...

Ive also thought of making some kind of salad, sounds weird for Christmas I know, but it is actually a great thing to eat for Christmas during summer.

Often people in NZ eat exactly what people in the Northern hemisphere eat, for Christmas, which makes for a strange scene-

many sweaty, uncomfortable people working over hot stoves and ovens to produce elaborate winter menus... then collapse after the meal as so full of food and so hot as well...

Sometimes people also spray shop windows and stuff with fake snow too. It has never seemed weird for some reason.

If you wish to use whole grain and vegetables, you have a wide choice. Couscous plus seeds, nuts and vegetables make a nice filling for vegetables.

I used to have a forum pal in Australia and their christmas menu also had summer dishes. She never made roast food or puddings. It was grilled seafood and ice cream for dessert..

Australians are a lot more sensible in this respect: They often have their Christmas as a barbecue... some kiwis also do this...

But Australia has a very dry climate and they are pretty much guaranteed a sunny day on Christmas.

In NZ it seems to rain every second Christmas, and some Christmases almost get monsoon-like tropical rain all day, so we dont really plan our Christmases outdoors as much as they often get rained out :) .

So we make the traditional winter foods often.

Yes, I suppose that the Kiwis and Aussies are world's apart. I looked up your average summer temperatures which are 20 - 30°C which isn't that hot if you're indoors.

It's usually always very cold over here on christmas day. However, we usually do get a sunny day.

I really like being in the UK during the festive season because of all the ambiance and food.

Well it is hot but it is a humid heat so you are a sticky mess... it is sort of an angry hot... also humidity raises the heat factor so if it is 30 C and humid it feels like 35 C in terms of comfort... Australia is different, people hide inside with the shades drawn some days as it is just so hot outside... I think they get humid heat in the northern part but it is mostly desert.

But anyway, yeah,, still thinking about what to make.. might look at some recipes today.

I have not yet decided what I will do for Christmas dinner. I usually go to my brother's, and my sister-in-law rarely prepares the vegetables without butter, so I make my dinner ahead of time and bring a plate for reheating. I also bring something to share, like a tofu quiche or a dessert.

For vegetables, I probably will have roasted Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, baked squash with apples, and green beans or carrots. I typically have made chickpea cutlets as well, which I love, but I am thinking of mixing it up this year and maybe making a lentil loaf or nut roast.

I likely will make fudge and an apple pie for dessert. I'm also thinking of making some sort of muffins or scones, maybe with cranberries. I bought a fresh bag tonight and stuck it in the freezer.

I have to get my act together, this year, and make either a nut roast or some kind of cutlet/patty. It's such a busy time of year, I always end up skimping on a main dish for myself. :(
