eggs - dioxins and PCB

”Vi måste hitta källan”
Pressmeddelanden - Svenska Ägg
Swedes knew about this problem in 2004 when fish from the Baltic were deemed as the problem. Feed has been checked since, but levels of PCB and dioxins have begun to raise again. Tests are being done quick, quick before this news hits the mainstream media. Ironic that eco-eggs are suffering and not caged bird's eggs. Could be the dioxins and PCB's come from the soil.
Special Omega 3 enriched eggs are for sale here in Sweden (Specialägg - Svenska Ägg) - hens eat feed enriched with either flax seed oil or ... fishlever oil - which has PCB's and dioxins in it (Miljögifter, dioxiner och pcb i fiskolja ).

(For those that still eat eggs,"Ethoxyquin (E324) is added to fish meal when it is processed on the boat. Fish meal is high in polyunsaturated fat. This type of fat is unstable and can spontaneously combust. Boats have sunk in the past due to this, and the US Coast Guard requires that fish meal be treated with ethoxyquin during transport.

When pet food companies buy this treated fish meal and use it, they often do not list the ethoxyquin on the label because they did not add it themselves. This is known as an "undeclared" ingredient." Is Feeding Fish Safe for Cats? | CatHealth.com

Be aware of possible cancer-causing substances. BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Byproducts, Animal Digest and chemicals/preservatives are all ingredients you want to avoid. Ex: low-quality dog foods use BHA as a preservation agent, a substance that reported to cause cancer over long periods of time. Dog Food

"Ethoxyquin is required to be added to fish-meal in order to prevent it from exploding during sea transport and storage. The European Union has set an combined upper limit for ethoxyquin and other antioxidants (BHA and BHT) of 150 mg per kg of feed." Ethoxyquin in fish feed - NIFES

"Though it has been approved for use in foods in the US, and as a spray insecticide for fruits, ethoxyquin has surprisingly not been thoroughly tested for its carcinogenic potential. Ethoxyquin has long been suggested to be a possible carcinogen, and a very closely related chemical, 1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline, has been shown to have carcinogenic activity in rats, and a potential for carcinogenic effect to fishmeal prior to storage or transportation." Allergic contact dermatitis to ethoxyquin in a farmer handling chicken feeds - A case of allergy to ethoxyquin (a preservative added to chicken feed to inhibit vitamin degradation) in a chicken farmer is presented. Although the offending allergen was identified in this patient, it proved difficult to find ethoxyquin-free chicken feed products and the patient's dermatitis persisted. When facing the clinical problem of dermatitis in animal workers, the possibility of allergic contact dermatitis to components in animal feeds must be considered.
