Here in the U.S., public schools from kindergarten through grade 12 are funded through local property taxes. This means that school districts in poorer areas have less to spend on schools than school districts in wealthier areas.

I think that this is a major factor in perpetuating generational poverty, making it all that much more difficult for the young to escape the poverty that they were born into.

In my opinion, funding for public education should be pooled nationally and allocated to schools on a per student basis, with some adjusting factors for adjustment to teacher and other salaries based on factors such as differing costs of living in different areas, as well as some sort of pay incentive to draw good staff to less desirable locations.

I think that’s the only way we would ever be able to address successfully some of the inequalities of opportunity that have become so deeply embedded in our society.

Of course, I don’t think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell of this ever coming to pass, because it would be such a deeply unpopular move.

What are your thoughts? For those not from/in the U.S., how is public education funded in your respective countries?

I actually didn't know public school funding was completely from local taxes if this is the case. I never had kids so it's not something I've been involved in since surviving public school myself. This still is for me a complicated issue when it's brought up such as in your thread since I was put in classes for slow learners when I wasn't a slow learner and have average intelligence. I don't know how to solve all these inadequacies. They come in many forms. I wonder too if quality teachers are an issue for poorer areas. I can imagine they are.

^I didnt know thats how the funding was put together for schools in the USofA .

In NZ , public education just comes from the taxpayers purse , some schools in lower socioeconomic areas receive slightly more that other well of areas .

Really, I am not up on it , I "think" kindergarten attendance is 20 hours a week free with a charge over and above that .
