Meat without livestock?

I think it's definitely feasible, and it'll be a revolution in food production once they're able to scale up the production to industrial volumes.

I see it as the future of food for the millions of domesticated animals.
Who knows what else this research will find? More hope for organ transplants, research into other disease? Sources of nutritionally complete foods for emergency rations? I have no idea of potential costs but it seems worthy of research

Somebody's planning to make a pile load of cash from it, but it's a ways off. It's better then dead animal parts but how it would look on your plate ... we have to wait and see.

I wonder what would happen if the traditional way of getting beef and dairy products was replaced with something like this. Like what would it do to those industries? I imagine something like this would cost more than traditional farming?

Yep, but things always tend to turn out badly when mass production becomes the key goal. I just wonder in order to make this taste like actual meat, would they need to artificially create that taste? And then, it's just a different kind of unethical behavior, really. I'm just guessing, but you know what I mean?

It totally could open the door up to even solving world hunger, when you think about it. That is a ways off, but it is a nice thought.

I'm still kind of on the fence about this, but it seems so interesting!

No, it will be cheaper. Lab meat production can be scaled up much more than conventional livestock production as it can be done in more factory-like fashion. Just think about it: You won't have to worry about the usual animal diseases as much, because this production can be performed in a much more controlled environment in a lab / factory. There are significantly less waste products that you need to get rid of (poop, unwanted parts of the carcasses because you only grow the parts you want). There will be lower costs for feed. Time to market will probably also be shorter. There are savings in every part of the production chain.

Yes, there are probably going to be issues with food going to waste, maybe pollution, maybe food safety regulations being ignored, and so on. But there won't be animals that suffer for a lifetime just to end up on someone's plate. And the pollution and greenhouse gas emissions will be lower than with conventional animal food production.

It won't be as energy and cost effective as wholefood vegan food. If only people would go vegan ....!
