I can understand somewhat her having children before she knew the reason but after finding out that she had a disorder I can't work out how she went on to have more children knowing that they would have such short and probably painful lives. Three more kids being born and not living until the age of 2. She should have thought about their lives and not just her desire to have a child.

Based both upon what the mother herself describes as their suffering and the description of the disorder Leigh's disease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I would say that yes, they suffered.
