Hi

I have been a vegan for nearly 4 years but I struggle with alternatives to non-dairy milk in recipes. I don't drink tea or coffee and never have, so I don't have milk in the house and don't particularly like the taste. All of the recipes for baked oats or chia pudding contain milk. Is there an alternative?

Do you dislike the taste so much that you don't even like food where plant milk is just one of many ingredients?

Have you tried the many different kinds of plant milk out there? The taste can vary quite a lot, even between different brands of the same milk. E.g. oat milks taste different between Oatly, Oato, Alpro and so on.

(Also, sorry to ask this but how do you get enough calcium without fortified plant milks?!)

Hi

All of the recipes for baked oats

I can't see how that can be. I googled baked oats and this one using almond milk was the first on on the list,

and... even if a recipe calls for milk you can use almond milk OR oat milk. Oat milk seems to be a particularly good sub in oat recipes cause it is just more oats.

I just googled chia pudding. This was the first recipe that came up.

You must not have looked very hard. :)

BTW, if you don't use a lot of milk in your household you can buy shelf stable milk. It's sold in boxes. not only does it not need to be refrigerated till you open it - after you open it - it lasts a long long time.

I don't find the shelf stable milks one opened to last any longer then the refridgerated ones--7 days, maybe up to 10?

If you have a high speed blender I'd suggest getting some raw almonds or cashews. Just soak, rinse, and blend with fresh water
You can try making oat milk too. I'll look up how I do it, but it needs straining, and I gave up on trying to use the pulp, so only make it when I'm out of store bought

I never use any kind of milk in oats or when I've made chia puddings, and often sub water in baked goods recipes unless I see a real need for milk

Any liquid will do.
So, depending on the type of recipe you are making, you can substitute pb milk with yogurt and water, apple juice, cold tea, pureed fruit with water or even plain water. When using just plain water or fruit juice, you can also add a bit of oil to make the mixture tastier. As I have stated, it all depends on the actual recipe.

The OP stated that she doesn't particularly like the taste of plant based milk. She has requested alternatives not oat or almond milk.
