Nutrition & Diet October Health Challenge

And I am back again. Now that I am all moved into my new place, I can focus on other things. I have to find a place to walk where I feel safe and I have to seriously consider joining Planet Fitness. I lost a couple pounds during the move and I hope to keep it off and continue that trend.

Hey, everybody! I can't believe it's October already.
I pretty much have the same goals as last month (even though there are no big hikes for me on the horizon, though it's good to be prepared).

Keep up with the weights (three days a week) and cardio (five to six days a week);
Drink plenty of water (minimum 48 ounces a day);
And lose three more pounds (I lost two in September :) )

I am going to gear up for that 30-day shred workout (in November, haha) just to mix things up a bit. I have been doing lots of Leslie Sansone stuff, but I find the "boosted walking" (read: jogging) bothers my right ankle if I do too many days in a row, so it will be back to more treadmill sessions and walking outside (the weather is so great this time of year). I will just make sure I do the videos no more than three days in a row. I really like them, though.

My goals, even though I did not participate last month:

-Stretch more, and improve flexibility. I suppose I could take up yoga, but I don't know if I have the time for that right now.
-Learn to breathe more efficiently, and to not tense up my neck (when trumpet playing). Also, figure out correct diaphragm breathing.
-Improve memory of dreams by not being as lazy and writing them down. Kind of a mental goal.
-Stay in the moment, and pay attention to my surroundings. (Improve consciousness, I suppose)
-Taking time to relax throughout the day, and becoming more relaxed in general.

Kind of vague goals, I suppose. Maybe they don't all qualify as health goals, but I think they could, depending on how you look at them. I just need to remember to stay focused, and more importantly, to relax.

Daily yoga and meditation would help with all your goals! :)

They definitely qualify. Mental health is as important as physical health, IMHO.

I had a really good treadmill workout today. Fifty minutes and I climbed almost 1,900 feet. I love the treadmills at my work gym because they have that distance-climbed figure. I love seeing the number go up and up and up. :D

Yeah, I figured you would say that, ledboots...

I don't know when I would have time for yoga everyday. I suppose I could wake up even earlier, but then I would probably be more tired. And we don't really have a good area for doing exercise like yoga in my house. Also, I would have to learn the poses, but I could probably do that myself, or find a class if needed.

Just try a short guided meditation, maybe? There are some online that are about 15 minutes. I'm such a nag I know.

I joined Planet Fitness and went today for the first time in about 3 years. I got there in time for the introduction class which was a refresher for me as I did remember some things about the machines. Was helpful that the trainer determines the settings on the machines for you. I don't plan on doing the full workout plan he sets up for you but will pick and choose what I want to do. I got on the treadmill for 30 minutes after the class and I think it is a good start.

Definitely goals that count! Good luck. I always try to make really specific goals because that way it's easier to make myself achieve them, but everybody is different.

I don't have any goals, except stay alive and reasonably sane (!), but good luck everybody :)

I just saw the meditation thread, which I had forgotten about. It seems like there are some potentially helpful links on there. Unfortunately my ipod is currently messed up, so I won't be able to listen to them to conveniently.

I used to be much more able to just relax, and I was really into acupressure. I also took brief forays into PMR, which helped me recharge on long bike rides, and some Tai Chi, which I soon gave up on.
Lately I have just been more stressed. Before I could quickly bring myself to consciousness or relaxation at anytime during the day, but now I feel like there is something blocking the way. Kind of like I'm too stressed or busy to relax.

I know exactly what you mean. I've always been a ball of anxiety, which is why I discovered meditation in the first place. I couldn't relax and got most anxious when trying to relax. I now do lots of different meditations and sometimes use crystals. All woo and stuff, I know, but I like them. :)

I went to the gym this morning and did about 40 minutes on the treadmill; I made myself jog for a couple minutes to get my heart rate up into the fitness zone. I will try out the other machines one of these days but the treadmill is my favorite thing to do.

The heart is a very important muscle, good for you! I avoid cardio, which I know is bad. :oops:

^^^ My cardio is very low-impact: I walk to where I have to go, sometimes very long distances (~13 miles within 24 hours this past week). I walk at from 3 to 4 miles per hour though; running wouldn't take so much time, but it hurts!

I do not "run". I jog slowly, 3.5 mph, and only for about 2 minutes at a time. :D I would rather just walk fast but the jogging gets the heart rate up which I am told is needed for the workout to BE cardio.

Some of you might have seen me post about Parkrun before, or might just know about it.
Well, it's a 5k timed run, same place every Sat morn at 9am. We usually have about 150 turn up to do it (all free and run by volunteers).
When I went my first day in August I couldn't run the whole thing.
I've run 8 times and knocked over 6 mins off my time!!!
Yday I did it in 28.17 :-O
Here are a selection of my photos (sadly not one for this week) xxx
