Also Caucasian is not suuuper geographically accurate for white people.
Without looking it up, I believe "Caucasian" comes from rather outdated "science". The thinking was that those of the Caucasus region had the most "white" skulls or something like that and thus that's where white people are from.
there's absolutely no right answer that makes everyone universally satisfied.
Reminds me of when I was talking to two different Northern Irish about if "British" was correct or not (one said it was perfectly acceptable, the other did not).
I'm gonna vote on the 'it was a shitty situation with inevitably shitty outcomes either way' cause by that time the fledgling US was already in deep shittiness wrt the people who were already in their brand spanking new country.
It was a horrible situation. There was a lot of cheating of Indians by whites (including some whites that later became very notable), and there was a fair amount of Indians deciding that all whites were the same and deserved the same punishment. (There were also a fair amount of Indians who remained friendly to the whites and still got screwed over. )
