Putin, Erdoğan meeting to focus on restoring ties between Turkey-Russia: Kremlin
Erdogan in Russia: A speedy reconciliation with Putin | Europe | DW.COM | 08.08.2016
Putin called the downing (of a russian plane) a "stab in the back." And, in a speech in December, he said that "Allah has decided to punish the ruling clique in Turkey and deprived them of their reason." Furthermore, Russian officials accused their Turkish counterparts of getting involved in oil deals with the "Islamic State." Russian state television ran anti-Erdogan content on an almost daily basis. A right-wing parliamentarian called on Putin to drop an atomic bomb on Istanbul in order to "wash away" the Turkish metropolis.

Over the past few weeks, however, it has become apparent that Russia's anger is what has washed away. Just a few days after writing his letter to Putin, Erdogan was on the phone with Russia's president. It was then that they agreed to the meeting that will now take place. Putin also lifted the ban on charter flights, and Russian tourists have flocked to Turkish beaches since late July. There was another phone call after the failed July 15 coup attempt: This time it was Moscow on the line, with Putin expressing support for Erdogan.

Tuesday's talks in Moscow are expected to focus on re-starting trade and investment and on restoring important tourism and travel ties.
The two leaders will also seek common ground in resolving the conflict in Syria where they still back opposing sides.
The BBC's Sarah Rainsford says Russia is keen to capitalise on Turkey's cooling relations with the West following the failed coup.
Monday's meeting - PressTV-Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan vow to create NSTC
Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan have vowed to work together to prepare the grounds for the construction of a North-South Transit Corridor (NSTC) which is expected to provide a faster and more efficient trade connectivity between Europe and South East Asia.
The three presidents also agreed to cooperate on natural gas industry. They said in their statement that they will specifically work together over the transfer of technology as well as the shipment and delivery of gas.

Putin, Rouhani and Aliyev also voiced support for efforts to connect the power grids of their respective countries – what they said would contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The significance of close banking cooperation to attract investments and bring in new technologies for development projects was also highlighted in the trilateral talks.

Erdogan visiting Putin is spooking people -
Turkey's Erdogan unnerves West with Putin visit - BBC News By Michael Sahlin Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies
In view of the current "frost" in the AKP government's relations with both the US and the EU, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decision to choose Russia for his first official visit abroad since the botched coup appears rich in symbolism.

And Western leaders will be looking on nervously.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Turkey Monday to attend an energy conference, during which he will also meet his Turkish counterpart to discuss energy deals and trade.

Putin will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the 23rd World Energy Congress, which began on Sunday.

The high-level visit is significant and comes as both leaders – who began normalizing relations over the summer that were strained over the shooting of a Russian plane by Turkey in November -- seek to revamp joint energy projects and trade.

One significant project Russia wants to finalize is an agreement on building a pipeline under the Black Sea, named the "TurkStream,” which would transport gas from Russia to Europe.

Since beginning to patch up its relations with Russia, Turkey has intervened militarily in the Syrian conflict against Islamic State (ISIS) militants, a move Moscow did not oppose. Also, Ankara has withheld on any strong condemnation of the intensified assault on opposition groups in the Syrian city of Aleppo by Russia and the Syrian regime.
