The “Slaughterhouse Poem” was written by Anonymous. It needs no introduction, no comment, and no opinion. It speaks for itself and we are left to our own to decide what to do with it.

I will never see the sun rise, I will never see it set,
I will never feel a kind touch, I will never be a pet.
I will never feel love, for I will not be loved,
As I’m led to my murder, being prodded, poked and shoved.
As they cut my tender skin, I wondered who would care,
If anybody out there, would consider my despair.
For you did not see me die, and you did not see me bleed,
You did not hear me cry, for the meat that you don’t need.
You did not watch them kill me, you could not feel my pain,
You will try not to think of me, as you blindly eat again.
I was the cow you ate on Monday, the pig you had midweek,
I was the turkey for your Christmas, I was the calf you liked to eat.
I was the chicken in your sandwich, the duck you had for tea,
I felt pain beyond belief, but you never thought of me.
Because thinking can be painful, and you refuse to see,
That for every time you eat meat, those animals must bleed.
The cow was killed for Monday, the pig was scalded too,
The turkey lived for 16 weeks, and the calf had died for you.
The chicken lived inside a cage, the duck could hardly move,
And all of this suffering, occurred for so-called food.
I fail to see a reason, as there is no need,
When humans eat my meat, it is purely for their greed.
You may think you’re above me, that you have advantage,
But a kind, innocent creature, is better than a savage.
So next time you’re out shopping, try to feel some guilt,
For those animals have died, for your eggs, your meat and milk.
My heroes are those people, who will not bite into me,
So I ask a simple favor, and please stop eating meat.
I’m asking for the cows, the pigs and all the sheep,
I’m asking for the birds, who are more than just some meat.
They can’t speak themselves, so please let’s be their voice,
Every one born into this, for them there was no choice.
For you did not see me die, and you did not see me bleed,
You did not hear me cry, for the meat that you don’t need.

Thank you for sharing. Compassion for animals is so important, as well as compasion for those who suffer
by slaughtering the animals as their job. Few humans ever consider the toll on the workers in slaughterhouses
when they choose to eat animal products. For those humans reading this who have challenges "giving up"
eating flesh, dairy, eggs and fishes. please consider the horror suffered by humans who kill and dismember the animals.
Most are immigrants. You do not want their job.
The workers suffer emotionally and physically, all the while the USDA and OSHA have changed how slaughterhouse
workers bodily injuries are reported. Search--most dangerous
jobs in the USA--and you no longer see slughterhouse work on the list. This does not mean the jobs are
free from multiple injuries, or that things are vastly safer. It simply means that the workers who do not
know, will find it harder to understand the damage done to their bodies killing all day long. And that those
who talk about slaughterhouse workers have a more challenging time proving its' a "dangerous" job. However,
there is always an extremely high turnover rate in the industry, about 400%. That tells us something. Peace.

Oh, my reason for going vegan? it started for health until I understood the cruelty againt gentle animals. I started
doing this over 25 years ago and zi love animals. I guess I have saved over 1500 animal lives so far. Tip? find your
motivation, eat the most healthy foods you can, eat 25% or more of your foods, raw, make sure you get enough
iron, zinc, D3, and B12 (plug in your foods on www.cronometer.com), and just do it.

Health reasons inspired me initially. Reading "Fast Food Nation," now an older book, provided me more inspiration. Books on animal intelligence added even further motivation. Plenty of evidence exists that animals do suffer and they likely have some idea of what's happening to them, or they at least feel a sense of danger, while they await their demise in processing plants. Going back even further, when in school I didn't really know what meat was. I had no idea of its source. All I knew was that my family ate these various tasty shapes called "steak" or "hamburgers," etc., but they never resembled any animal. I of course had a basic notion that I was eating animals, but it never hit home personally until, in a High School anatomy class, I dissected a cat. Upon cutting open one of its thighs, I saw a substance that looked exactly like chicken. It was attached to an animal that had once been alive. An animal that sat right in front of me. I suddenly realized, to a very deep degree, what "meat" meant. I still remember my shock and revelation. It may seem absurd, but I had eaten meat for years before with some vague idea that it came from animals without truly understanding that I was eating the muscle tissue of animals. Muscle tissue much like my own. When one eats meat in forms that don't resemble animals in any way, the context can sometimes not even occur to people. At the very least, it can be conveniently ignored and forgotten about quickly. Though I didn't cut down on meat until much later, that direct experience helped bring the concept of "meat" into the real world for me. I sometimes wonder how many people eat meat throughout their lives without a personal realization of what that action truly entails.
