Safety Pins

Pro tip: The victim does not have to be Muslim.

There's a woman selling safety pin necklaces on Etsy for $335. Part of that $335, 10 percent, goes to Planned Parenthood.

Just donating $335 to Planned Parenthood would be better. You can even put the donation in Mike Pence's name.
I hate that people are using that to make money, but America is the land of exploiting everything you can to make a buck.

Haha.

I don't understand why anybody would think it was a good idea for government to try and restrict access to birth control. Just bizarre. It must cost more in the long run, even if you were just looking at it in strictly economic terms.o_O

I'm not going to apologize for what I said about beancounter, but I will apologize for taking his bait and going confrontational in this thread about it. It may have been uncalled for, not because he's right or because I'm wrong, but because this probably isn't the place and time.

It's just hard for me to stay quiet about someone accusing me of "censoring" them over the internet and making the false equivalence between 'telling someone their tone is off' and 'advocating for your human rights.'
Whoa, easy does it! Did I demand that anyone make apologies??? No. So don't go gettin' up in my sh*t 'cuz I didn't do a damn thing to offend you. Pardon the hell out of me for trying to lighten the friggin' mood around here once in a while.... christ. :bag:

Now, I realize everyone's ire is up lately, but try to relax just a little. ME... FRIEND. :flower:

When I think back to all the times I really needed needed a safety pin!
I wonder if one of those pin-wearers would give someone their pin? :p
I think it's all so petty and seems more for show than anything meaningful. Actions say it all.

Well, I'm wearing one on my shirt & one on my hat. Hell with it! Fear will not hold me back! Now, I won't go LOOKING for trouble but I sure as hell won't back down if it comes to that. I want to be the type of person I admire. There haven't been any reports of anything heinous going on in my town, don't really see that kinda sh*t around here, but never say never.... I will not tolerate ANY of it!

Even stuck a couple pins in my pocket for anyone else who want one. And while I've always been one to shun trends, I actually like this idea. Simple. And knowing THIS area, probably a conversation-starter because nobody know what the hell the pins represent. LOL

And if it's all for naught, if nothing at all EVER happens, at least I'll always have a safety pin handy! :p

Hey, with the horribleness of this past week, I'm just trying to find even the slightest shred of light. LMAO

That's good, because when you lose a button on your shirt there's nothing like a safety pin!
I'm more than a little jaded from all these people who insist they aren't prejudiced because they have 'friends" of other types, but have no understanding of their culture or life.

You know the movie "Imitation of Life"? I've always felt that would make a good modern adaptation.

For what it's worth, I changed my Amazon Smile charity from Heal the Bay to Planned Parenthood after the election.

Amazon.com Help: About AmazonSmile

I have an Amazon Prime membership and buy a lot of stuff from Amazon (whenever I want a specific item I look for it on Amazon first), so any donations they get from me over time through Amazon Smile will add up.

I've been doing that, too. It was the ASPCA, but just changed it to the Planned Parenthood in my area. I also noticed that I've only generated $2.05

Hey, hey, no, there was no malice toward you in that post, trust me. Either you misread my tone or I didn't get it across well enough. If it's the latter I'm very sorry for not being clear. There's only one person I'm disgusted with here and it's not you.

To clarify - I didn't think you were demanding apologies for anything. All I wanted to do was apologize for going off in this thread while still making it clear that it didn't mean I wasn't still annoyed, bitter, and a range of other colorful adjectives about what beancounter said.

Guys, please play nice! As was already explained a few times, we should not be quarreling among ourselves, especially not now. Discussion, yes, insults, no.

No worries, doll.

I used to do that!! :D In fact, I almost did it again yesterday... still might... gotta file down the sharp points a bit first. ;)

I remember when the real punks would just put it through without any ice or anything like that.

When I was a kid, being a punk was the pinnacle of anything cool.. I made a punk out of plastercine once, he had a multicoloured mohawk...

Oh my, I do remember that time!

I still can't make up my mind if I was too timid to dress like a punk or if it simply did not occur to me, given the fact that I found it cool at that time to wear suits (complete with leather ties, you remember these???) to high school and fit in...

In all seriousness, though. I can't play nice with someone who repeatedly lumps anyone who speaks out on certain issues into a single crowd and demeans them. Just because calling out 'SJWs' is a more socially accepted form of bigotry doesn't mean it's truly much better than its more blatant cousins.

FortyTwo, please note that there *are* people that even I might rightfully refer to as being "Social Justice Warriors" (and the article does give a good example of well-meaning *white* people being offended that persons of colour are not overjoyed about their display of companionship and attack them).

At the same time, I also understand that the term is often used by right-wing people to denounce anybody on the left who is not only concerned with his own welfare but also with the well-being of others. So I also do not really like the term, and we should think about using other terms here on the forum, as IS has already pointed out some time ago in the aptly named thread ...
Social justice warriors

Yes, it's a pejorative term, according to Wikipedia. Is there a better, more neutral term to describe this group? I think "contemporary social justice activists" might work ...

Some things one can do in addition to symbolic gestures:
If you have tech skills, if you are computer literate, teach those who aren’t. Same if you have legal skills and really any skills that can be offered, taught, or shared. If you can afford it, take a self-defense class, even better if you can afford to gift someone who can’t pay to go with you. Impact is a fine organization that centers the empowerment of women and sexual assault and domestic violence survivors, and they have chapters in several cities. If you have space in your home, consider how it can be used to shelter, hide, protect, and feed those risking detention and/or deportation.
