Farming by hand
Preserving your own food
Creating your own clothes, including shoes and boots if you live in a cold area
Cleaning your teeth without an item from the local store

There are others as well. Do you have the ability to do any or all of these?

I think I can safely say I have little experience, if any, in these activities.

My parents used to grow e.g. strawberries, rhubarb, lettuce, potatoes, plums, and I helped with this when I was little. They also did some preservation of these foods, but I wasn't involved in that part of it very much.

Potatoes can be preserved in a dark, cold and dry cellar. Plums can be preserved in an airtight container after briefly boiling, I think? Strawberries can be cooked briefly with a lot of sugar and then frozen. You'd need a freezer though.

I can do the first two without any issues.
I can clean my own teeth without drugstore items, but you probably wouldn't want to...as that could lead to having to do your own dentistry as well.

I've never made my own cloths.

I wouldn't be able to do anything like that.:rofl:My family in Ireland probably had most of those skills but it is a very hard life. I remember when I used to stay there waking up and hearing the farmer in my family out really early in the morning and exhausted when he came in after a day at work.

That's so funny - Earlier, I was JUST wondering about how I would clean my teeth if suddenly I couldn't buy my tube of tooth paste and get a tooth brush - I concluded that I have no idea!

I grow some of my own food and can make clothes (well sort of). I am also into preserving food... never know when these skills might become essential.

Don't know how I'd make shoes. I've imagined if I had to totally return to nature that it would be best on a tropical island, in which case I'd just go barefoot... not sure if that counts :)

Obviously if civilization collapses(living in a world of limited resources, it will happen) you'll have to start all over. Learn everything over again. How would you clean your teeth in a case like that? If you start getting many cavities and can't find a dentist, it may make life unbearable. This is not an issue most people think about, but I've thought about it a lot lately.

Do you believe civilization will collapse? That would be a great topic for the debate forum.

I think the real question there is "will we re-learn to make tooth brushes and dental floss before we re-learn how to refine sugar".

I'm mostly thinking that scraping, picking and flossing with whatever is to hand is probably sufficient for those on a refined sugar free diet.

Rotting teeth tend to be a non issue once the crap modern people eat is removed from the diet :p. The bacteria that primarily causes tooth decay does so due to the way it metabolizes sucrose.

I'm fairly confident I could survive without civilization, though probably not as a vegetarian.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I think it will collapse. Society as we know it might, and the world might become a horrible place, but as long as we are dependent on resources that favor larger groups working in coordination, some form of civilization will be maintained. Unfortunately :p

I can grow and preserve a few things, thanks to my mom's teaching, but don't think i could feed the family on it. My grandfather used baking soda to clean his teeth and only had one cavity, in his 80s. He said as a child on a farm in Lithuania they used a clean twig with the bark peeled off and baking soda.

I can sew basic shirts and skirts, cannot knit or anything though much to my mom's dismay. Shoes, no idea.
