The Atheist/Agnostic/Freethought/Humanist/Skeptic/Nonbeliever Thread

By definition, atheists have no beliefs.

That would akin to saying that the definition of a negative figure is that it has no numbers.

Definition of belief: "conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence"

The belief that there is/are no god(s) perfectly fits that definition.

The only thing the fits the definition of non-belief is when there is neither a positive NOR a negative belief in play.

A negative belief (as to the existence/reality/whatever) is just as much a belief as a positive one, basicaly.

Existence is just a lucky roll of the dice.

In statistics, anything that is possible, will eventually occur give sufficient time and opportunity. (e.g. If you toss a coin several billion times, a few will land on its edge instead of its side.

Similarly, if you have billions and billions of stars with many billions more planets, a few will have all the right conditions to support and generate life.

By definition, atheists have no beliefs.

Sorry to disagree Amy, but what kind of silly logic is this? Blob says it best above. In the words of the mighty Neil Peart:

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

You can substitute belief here as well. Choosing not to have any is still having some.

So by your insistence, since atheists have belief, they have to believe in something, not nothing? Which means, atheism is a religion? Who is our Pope? Where is our Bible? What rules are we expected to follow? What are our sins, and who or what do we sin against? Who do we go to in order to confess our sins?

Atheists believe in nothing, which is still making a choice.

Now, when people try to insist atheism is a religion or it is a belief system of its own, that is when I get annoyed...
