US The Everything Thanksgiving Thread

"We’re lucky turkeys would never do this to us—you don’t have to do it to them, either," PETA wrote in a caption to a post that has received over 26.7 million views online. The picture attached to the post depicts a family of turkeys sitting around a human turkey at the center of the table.

Classic PETA move. Make something outlandish and get twice (or ten times) the exposure when mainstream media reports on it.

Actually, the line that PETA uses about Turkeys not eating us is sort of dumb. But the important part which seems to have been neglected by the critics is that "you don’t have to do it to them, either,"

Republican strategist Scott Presler wrote, "Do you ever post about how many birds are killed by wind turbines?"

Maybe. I found out with just a little googling that the best estimate is less than a million a year. Which seems insignificant when it's estimated that windows are responsible for almost a billion bird deaths each year.

But maybe more importantly 46 million turkeys are slaughtered each year. Most of them on Thanksgiving.

But 46 millions pales before the 70 Billion chickens consumed worldwide annually. (202 million chickens every day.)

I'm drooling! Everything looks so delicious. I'm not sure our family is going to do a Thanksgiving this year given the situation with my mom and stepdad. :( I will be making apple pie, though!

Im so confused this year- We had the "black friday sales" at the mall yesterday- which is usually on Thanksgiving week (bizarre to have a Black Friday sale without Thanksgiving but I dont make these rules up... )
but then on google it said Thanksgiving is on Thursday 28th this year? Either way I will await pictures.

It's been 'Black Friday' since the last 2 weeks over here. All the super/hypermarkets are doing BF deals and Amazon has also been promoting various items at a discounted price.
To make matters worse, the local council has already put up some (very sad) Christmas decorations about 3 weeks ago. Anyway, it doesn't really matter as they are so pathetic, that you don't notice them.

I'm finding our Black Friday deals to be weak. I was wondering why they started early. Good point about thanksgiving being late this year. I just assumed it was to get people buying stuff.

I wonder if the sales will get better on the real Black Friday.

Agree. I think that I will wait until either Thursday or early on Friday. Problem is that many sites crash as they cannot manage millions of consumers surfing.

What is everyone doing for Thanksgiving? My one and only experience of Thanksgiving was last year's during my stay in CA.
It was quite nice as it was just about food, family and friends; no gifts.

My cousin made everything plant based except for the turkey and dessert. I liked the mash, green beans but not the sweet potato marshmallow bake as it was far too sweet. The plant based roast and gravy was very disappointing.

Anyway, the overall experience was a pleasant one, though, I will never have another one, I'm pleased that I was there for that particular holiday.

This is why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday 🤩
Not sure what I'll be making. I fuss less and less because it's too much work for just myself when no one else will eat what I make. Plus everyone brings something and it ends up being too much food anyway.

I'll eat your share of the sweet potatoes. That is one dish I will always make for myself lol.

That must be it- an early Black Friday. It also has signs saying "Sale of the year!"

Trying to "make fetch happen", but in NZ the biggest sale is Boxing Day, and it will always be so...
I need to take note of that and avoid the mall next Friday as I guess then the real Black Friday sale will be happening. Often there are thousands and thousands of people there on that day and can take an hour to park the car.

We have our meal at Christmas. Usually summer based foods though- but I have been non traditional over the last few years and just had tofu fried rice, this year thinking of having Salt and Pepper fried tofu with peanut butter noodles.

But I might be being lazy, I suspect. Dessert- berry fruit salad, perhaps peaches, apricots, nectarines- all can be added... lots of things to go on anyway.

In the summer you can eat a lot but it has to be light, as it is hot and people eat rich foods at Christmas you tend to see people sleeping all over the couches in the afternoon. So it is nice to avoid that.

So my nephew Sean was sort of bummed that we weren't going to get together for Thanksgiving with everything going on, and he and my sister decided we should bring the meal to my mom. So that's what we are doing. :) Everyone is going to bring a few things, and mom can just supervise, lol.

I will be bringing apple pie, mashed potatoes, turnips, squash-apple bake and cranberry sauce. I have two chickpea cutlets in the freezer, so I think I will have those for my protein. I'm seeing if I will have time to make either a nut roast or a seitan roast. I would really like the seitan roast I made for the holidays last year, but I may not have time to make it.

Im glad your mum can have a proper celebration, and that sounds like a lovely spread- sides are so important with these chickpea cutlets or roasts. :)

@KLS52 @Freesia, thank you. :) I am glad we are doing it after all as well. I kind of was poopy about doing anything, as I'm spent, but after thinking about it, I am so thankful that my mom is still here with us, plus I'll have fun in the kitchen with all that cooking. :) And I'll get to see some of my family. It will be a nice day, I think. :)

You're welcome, and it is great to be able to spend that time. We are now sure what we are doing this year- really up in the air- not sure who can be there... and additionally I cant find the Christmas tree so not sure if that will go up or not... hopefully i will be able to find it.

It is the 100th year of the Macy's parade this year. I don't normally care or watch it, but I thought that was a fun bit of trivia. It is also the 98th parade. They did not have it for 3 years because they needed the material during WW2.
