News UK general election 2015 discussion

I took the quiz just for fun (I'm an American) but I couldn't put in a valid English postal code at the end so couldn't get results. :)

SW1A 0AA -postcode for the Palace of Westminster
EH99 1SP - postcode for Holyrood (Scottish Parliament)
CF99 1NA - postcode for Senedd (Welsh Assembly)

I'm voting Green. I'm firmly in a Labour area, that's probably not going to change any time soon, but the Greens do okay around here so I'm sticking to my guns. I'm personally not a fan of tactical voting, I'd rather just vote for the party I want in.

Regarding the quiz that was posted, it's important to remember there is often a big difference between the promises and flowery language in political programs and the actual policies the parties will pursue once they are in government or in a negotiating position with a minority government.

Politicians lie? Surely not.

I will now, I didn't know any codes then! :)

Oh right, I thought you meant you didn't realise you could get the result using a post code, not that you couldn't find an example of a post code on the internet.o_O:D I was going to give an example but all I could think of were places I have lived.:p

Well, true, but that wasn't exactly my point. I would trust certain political parties to deal with certain issues, but what they say on other issues I would take with a huge pinch of salt. So while the results of quizzes like these may seem to indicate you are not as well aligned with your favourite party as you thought, I think it makes sense to instead consider which issues are the most important to you and which parties are actually championing these particular issues as their core issues.

I could have looked one up but was in the midst of taking the quiz on my phone browser on 3G and couldn't open another window.

You can put in your postcode to see how powerful your vote is meant to be.

Here is another quiz if anyone is interested.:D

Who Shall I Vote For?

ETA In that test I got Greens first and then Lib Dems, and against Conservative and Ukip, unsurprisingly.

Labour, Green and Plaid. I live in England, can't vote Plaid.
I was against UKIP and the Tories, what a shocker.

Anybody else watch the Cameron and Miliband show?
I actually like Miliband a bit more now.

Also, this outcome of the programme may have decided my vote: Katie Hopkins Has Threatened To Leave Great Britain If Labour Wins The Election - BuzzFeed News

I thought Paxman showed his bias in the interviews. I think Miliband came over as the more human person, which wasn't difficult against shiny face David Cameron. I thought it was funny when Ed was trying to show how tough he was and he was tripping over his words. It was quite endearing. He seems very boyish.:p

Ed Miliband strikes back: Am I tough enough? Hell yes. Would I have a pint with David Cameron? No, but I would share a bacon sarnie - General Election 2015 - UK Politics - The Independent

So did anybody else watch the debate?

I missed the first half an hour, so missed the economy question.

I want to move to Scotland to vote SNP. She was brilliant

Yes, we watched it. They all did OK, but I wonder what the effect will be. If I understand correctly, these sorts of debates are rare in the UK. Seeing all the party leaders debate like this on equal terms will perhaps make the lesser known parties seem like more viable options to the voters. I think a hung parliament is a given now.

There was a party leader debate again yesterday, but without Cameron and Clegg. Apparently, they're not interested in public debate about politics. Or just too cool to talk to those plebs in the other parties.

I read that in the debate it was revealed that three parties - Greens, SNP and PC - preferred Miliband/Labour over Cameron/Conservatives as prime minister. Not surprising, really.

Looking at the forecasted MP numbers at ElectionForecast.co.uk we get Labour (277) + Greens (1) + PC (3) + SNP (42) + maybe SDLP (3) = 322.

The current coalition is projected to get 307 (280 + 27). With support from others: + maybe UKIP (1) + maybe DUP (8) = 316.

So it could get very close, and negotiations after the election could get quite important and difficult.

I decided I am voting Green, some of their policies are ludicrous but I cannot be bothered to vote for any of the other parties.
I'm not fantastic at Maths but even I realise that the Labour and the Tory financial figures for their pledges do not add up.

Oh yeah, I meant to say yesterday that I was watching Daily Politics and the Conservative party want to give MPs a free vote on whether to repeal the ban on fox hunting with dogs. Just another reason to despise the Tories and hope they don't get another chance at government!

Hear, hear.

I think the one crucial thing that needs to happen after the election for the Conservatives to be kicked out of the government offices, is that Labour and SNP need to make a deal. IIRC Labour / Milliband has ruled out a coalition government with SNP, but that doesn't stop them from making a deal about SNP supporting a Labour minority government.

The Tories have also apparently promised to roll out more badger culls if they win, whereas Labour has pledged to give up on culling. (Source: Daily Mail - Vets' U-turn on shooting wild badgers: 'Culling' not proven to be effective and humane' )

I am voting Green. I'm away on holiday so have applied for a proxy vote for a family member to vote for me.
They will not vote Labour for me. Besides, this is a pretty safe Tory seat anyway.

I trust them to vote Green for me. But I know full well that I'm going to get a text message somewhere along the lines off "just been to vote. I voted UKIP for you. That was right, wasn't it?" Or they may say Tory. Just to try to wind me up.

(I don't trust for a postal vote to get to me in time because this holiday has only just been planned. Also, they compare the signature from the application form to the postal vote and I can never do the same signature twice, it goes completely wrong when I'm trying really hard to get it similar, so I don't think my vote would be counted. )
