Did you know that people are against vegetarians because they love animals? What happens, is that when someone is a vegan, it reminds them that meat comes from animals. They subconciously feel guilty, and there are two paths they can take. They could either go vegan, or they could start making silly excuses to defend meat-eating (like "plants have feelings too", or "we gave them life so we have the right to murder them" or, yes, I actually got told this once, "vegans are pathetic"). Also remember that people have eaten meat for millions of years, and veganism is a relatively modern movement (even though yes, there have been vegans and vegetarians for thousands of years).
