On one level, the question of whether humans and nonhumans experience sex in the same way is fairly simply dismissed: how would we know? We cannot know how a nonhuman experiences anything – they can’t be asked.

There’s no reason why an animal should seek sex unless they enjoy it. It is often proposed that an inherent “drive to reproduce” explains nonhuman sexual activity, but that is not an alternative here: if animals possess an instinct to reproduce, it needs to function somehow – and pleasure is a fairly basic motivator. The hypothesis that all sexually reproducing species experience sexual pleasure is, in itself, quite reasonable – as would be the hypothesis that animals find eating pleasurable.

It's shocking, I know!

Several dogs are mastrubating. And I'm sure you find other animals doing that. And that is purely for pleasure.

Birds masturbate also.

Isn't it funny how it takes studies to point out what those of us who live with and/or observe animals have known for a long time?!

I've seen cows(female) trying to have sex with other cows(also female).......or were they just young bulls..?

It can obviously be very difficult to accept such findings (that animals share so many of our characteristics) for someone who believes they're a good person and at the same time participate in animal exploitation. So the stamp of science is needed to convince them.

My male dog tried to hump my female puppy when we first adopted her. He doesn't appreciate the fact that she imitated his behaviour and now she is stronger than him and she mounts his back and mimics humping on him.

It's unbelievably hilarious when she does it and I can't stop laughing when I try and pull her off his back.

Well, how does that mysterious "drive to procreate" work?

Having sex is fun, that's why we like to do it. Just like nature intended. End of story.
