Can Anyone Help?

My last few onions have this green part in the middle. Dies it mean they're old? Is it safe to eat or should I cut around the green part?

Looks like new shoots, which don't bother me, I use them. What does is what looks like rotten brown layer. Often the cheap bags I sometimes get will have a mushy brown layer, but just one layer is bad and the rest seems perfectly fine. If not too bad I'll cut it out and rinse the rest
I got a good bag from Costco, think a 5lb for like $5

I'd bought a jar of sun dried tomatoes in oil particularly for sausages. I'd only had dried tomatoes, and didnt' like them, so I was very surprised how flavorful they are! Turned out to be just what I was missing in Italian seitan sausage flavor! Just hope the texture is as good!

Ok good to know. I just didn't want to be afraid of it if some got in whatever I'm using it for. I feel like this bag was not the greatest for freshness because most of the onions were like this and some did have the soft layer too.

That's me though, I also cut mold off bread and cheese. My son is horrified

I've done that too. Not so much lately because of what I keep hearing about how bad it is to do it. But I can't say I would never do it again lol.

Looking to make this Chipotle sauce but cashews are out of my college student budget. Any ideas for subs?

Creamy chipotle sauce

  • ¾ cups raw cashews, soaked overnight or boiled for 10 min
  • ½ cup plant-based milk, unsweetened
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, plus 1 tsp of adobo sauce, adjust to taste

Raw cashews are the most neutral of things that make food creamy and thick.
Peanuts would be a very very different sauce, but would be good!
Raw sunflower seeds would be a good sub, and last I checked, much cheaper than cashews.

I use raw walnuts for a lot of dips and things, and now find their price has gone way up! o_O
I buy organic raw cashews from Costco--2 lbs for $12.99. They make a great cheese and less than buying processed

I don't use cashews for many things so I pay a million dollars for a jar of raw cashew butter and I use that anytime a recipe calls for cashews. I can't be bothered soaking and then grinding/blending them. The cashew butter works beautifully.

I never thought to do that!

I keep mine in the freezer

Where do you get your yeast? I stopped at Aldi and the 3 pack went from .79 to .99 cents
I was wondering if the big container from Costco was worth buying, as sometimes I only want a 1/2 tsp

I hardly ever use yeast but I keep that in the freezer. I had purchased a bag off of Amazon a year ago. It was a one pound bag and it's still good. I don't get to Aldi and I don't recall seeing it at Costco but I'll check that out too. I definitely want to get their flour because a lot of people are using it for their sourdough.

whoa. I looked up Costco Red Star yeast. 32 oz for $8.99.
32 oz of yeast equals 128 packets 😲 That's 42 packets of 3, which cost (now) 42 dollars !
Really thats ridiculous. It would mean keeping in freezer, and not finding it, and maybe splitting with someone...buy jeez that's a deal
I'm not....unless it's 3 dollars off in their monthly sale
