Physical Exercise Do you belong to a gym

Just in case it makes makes any of the 'bendy-wendy's' smile ...

I have some of my vending machines in colleges and keep getting asked for a freebie by some of the cheekier students.

Came up with the 'vending machine man challenge' anyone succesfuly copies my two 'tricks' they get their choice of one free item from any machine ..

1. Stand up, knees fully back, both palms flat on the floor.

2. Link index fingers, fold arms into loop, put head through hole so formed.

Scores have tried and it only cost me two cans of pop so far.

Well, that concept has already been adapted in a way.

Eeek, I can't even do part one. I've been working on my flexibility by stretching lately, and just goes to show that working on it is a very, very good idea! ;) I'm only in my twenties and without any illness or physical disabilities, so I have zero excuse too.

Agreed. Whenever I see overweight people on the trail with me, I'm definitely not looking down my nose at them. In fact, there's a bit of a camaraderie if nothing else; we're all there with the same goal. :)
Amen to that. Especially since I used to be one of the overweight people on the trails :D. Everyone is at a different stage, but being out there is what counts.

I can't remember if I've linked this before or not. It's a video application for the American Ninja Warrior show. Quite an inspiration, especially when you consider that getting where she is now involved first losing almost 100 pounds.

I belong to the local YMCA. In a way I hate to spend the money, but I've found that I tend not to do weight-type or stretching-type exercises on my own. I get plenty of aerobic exercise because I walk to get around, so I don't use the treadmills at the gym- but I just know that if I bought a home weight setup, Soloflex, etc, it would just take up room and I'd never use it.

I may be biased, but it feels like a lot of people aren't really that keen on weightlifting.

Is this because of the "lifting weights = slow and bulky"-myth?

Seeing as my thread has been re ignited, I will put my post I made in the coffee house today here:

Thinking of joining a gym. There are some deals I can see online, for a short term membership anyway.

But I am terrified to exercise around all the people. The people.

I belong to Planet Fitness which is a basic gym that is only $10.65 a month. It has a nice friendly atmosphere and a high percentage of the people there are middle aged and older. I use the treadmill the most and sometimes I do sit-ups on a machine and arm lifts. I haven't been able to go very much the last couple weeks because I am working more.

That is incredibly cheap. I wonder how they manage to work out the 65 cents !

If I could find a place so cheap over here, I certainly would join a gym.

Just don't set off the lunk alarm!

I use some weights, just not in the traditional way. Shot puts are good for developing explosive strength. Sandbags and weight vests tend to fit my other needs more so than free weights. I could certainly accomplish many of the same goals in a weight room if I chose to. It's a matter of personal preference really. I'll recommend weight lifting to anyone who asks me for fitness advice, I just went a different route. It's more the gym atmosphere I don't like than the weights.

I follow rosstraining pretty closely because I like the science behind the techniques. He uses a lot of weights, right alongside many other techniques, and bulky or slow he is not.

"Spoilered" because I don't want to load the thread with videos, and because I've probably linked from him before due to the fact that I'm a rosstraining nerd.

No, there isnt anything like that nearby. It is mostly just the usual opening hours.

There are few apartment complexes here. And those that do exist are expensive. It is mostly detached houses with backyards. New Zealand isnt really designed with single people in mind.
