TV & Film Movie Lounge

I watched Gunpowder Milkshake last night. I enjoyed it but I've been struggling with if I can/should recommend it.

First thing you gotta know is that it is super violent. I actually checked a couple of reviews in trying to decide whether to recommend it or not and the word they used was UltraViolent. The violence is so constant and extreme you don't even take it seriously. Kind of like the spaghetti westerns or kung fu movies of yore. But this is a big budget film with all that entails so a more apt comparison is Kill Bill or maybe John Wick. I imagine that down in the bowels of the Netflix corp where the guys in production development work, some one said, How about we do a Kill Bill?

I didn't feel that the movie was a deliberate rip-off, more of a homage to the movies in the genre.

The next thing that jumps out to you, especially if you are like me and read a little bit about the movie before deciding to watch it is the cast. Its got a incredible cast list. And I would skip the trailer - too many spoilers.

I don't think 30M is a lot to spend on a movie nowadays. but the movie looks and feels very big budget. There is of course the aforementioned cast list. A lot of times when I watch a film that has a big budget - I wonder why they didn't spend more money on the script. Well, I'm sure that this movie didn't have a very thick script and I checked and the writer /director has a pretty thin resume. However i thought the writing was pretty good. There were some plot holes and some what I call internal inconsistencies but nothing very deep or wide. In fact, a little post movie discussion can fill in the plot holes pretty well.

The music is great and the costume and set design are if not excellent are more than interesting. both music and design work to set a mood and a theme.

The other thing that might be worth mentioning is the villains. Some of them are so inept they are comical. Come to think of it, the two fight scenes with the BoneHeads are actually funny.

So if you don't mind the violence (the body count of this film is probably in the hundreds), put this one on your short list.

I watched The Book of Henry last night on Netflix.
I'm not sure what I expected but it was full of surprises. some interesting twists and turns.
Warning: some sad stuff.
Naomi Watts was terrific as always. the actors playing the kids were great. And Sarah Silverman as a waitress was great, too.

I watched Blood Red Sky on Netflix.
Usually I shy away from scary stuff. And I also usually avoid Vampire or zombie moves.
but something about the description struck my fancy.
It wasn't bad. People who like this kind of stuff will probably like it.

Friday the 13th is next week! So time to pick a horror movie. But if you are like me and have grown soft over the years and therefore can't really enjoy horror anymore, here are some that'll provide you with the nostalgia without scarring your soul too badly:
  • Corpse Bride
  • ParaNorman
  • The Dead Don't Die
  • Shaun of The Dead
  • Warm Bodies

If you however want to scar your mind, I recommend The Babadook.

I absolutely love Dario Argento's Phenomena. It's a masterpiece and a work of art with an awesome soundtrack.

And here are some random favourites, even though I'm not sure if I'd like these anymore:
  • The Evil Dead and The Omen Collection (my childhood movies, I used to be obsessed with them)
  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 and 2003)
  • Friday The 13th (1980)
  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Halloween (all of the movies)
  • Braindead (1992)
  • Night of The living Dead

Can anyone remember what movie was the one where the zombie gets a name and learns to pick up a telephone? That was a really good movie. But I can't remember the name and can't find it anywhere.
Edit: it was Day of the Dead (1985). Oh man, that movie is great.

Good list, but BrainDead 1992, reminded me of BrainDead 2016. It was a TV show. Mostly political satire but some good brain eating going on too. Sadly it wasn't renewed for a second season.

The video didn't work, but I read about the series from Wikipedia. Sounds intense and promising.

I love Jaws!
It really is so good! The first is the best IMO. The second is good and I like the third the least but it’s still entertaining. I think too many special effects and they’re so bad compared to today’s standards lol. The first one is just good build up/suspense. Well done.

I remember the first time I saw Jaws 1 in the theater. So scary! The music is such a huge part of that movie too! The second one is good too which I had to record because it got too late for me to stay up.

we watched Inside Man last night - we realized we had watched it before, as it is from 2006 but still enjoyed it as we didn't remember how it ended - has lots of well known people like Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, Christopher Plummer, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Willem Dafoe.

I should re-watch that too. I have the new one on Netflix on my list.
