Can someone explain why one got the death penalty and the other got life in prison? Both of them are cold blooded premeditated murders. What is the difference?

Well, Bales entered into a plea deal to avoid potentially receiving the death penalty. I don't know whether such a deal was offered to Hasan.

True, Hasan didn't act in his own defense, so they just gave him the maximum.
Nonetheless, there was tons of evidence against Bales. The gov't didn't have to agree to a plea deal to score a conviction.
