Prior to joining any message board, I had thought there would be frequent criticism of companies involved with animal cruelty and those that help them out(politicians, the media) with limited criticism of PETA. My person experience has shown it's the opposite:there is frequent criticism of PETA and limited criticism of the Don Tyson's of the world. Do you think the lack of unity is a problem?

Why do we need to be unified? And why should peta be above criticism? (Please, please don't turn into a peta thread). And we all know that Tyson is doing wrong - but how helpful is it to point that out every time we turn around?

some people would say that we should all be united in having an avatar.

Huh. According to wikipedia, one of Don Tyson's favorite things was to go to the slaughterhouses. Sick *******.

I think criticising all these companies here on VV is a bit of preaching to the choir, really. PETA on the other hand there is some disagreement about, so that's more interesting to discuss.

That said, I agree to the extent that I suppose we could perhaps have some letter-writing campaigns or other coordinated effort some time.

Just in the thread I did last week on this board a person went out of their way to criticize PETA that had nothing to do with the conversion. Just one of the examples. I've never seen a person go out of their way to criticize Don Tyson.

I did a thread on Tyson's relationship with Bill Clinton. It is the only thread I've ever seen where Don Tyson was brought up in a thread on a vegetarian board, while PETA threads pop up constantly(Tyson was involved with trawling as well, so there is a reason I single him out).

There are simple things the government could do to change factory farms. One of them is the President could discuss factory farms for 3 minutes in the State of the Union. Millions and millions of viewers watch the speech, so even if it's small changes that have a limited effect it could do some good. A few rule changes could change factory farms greatly and of course the media could actually talk about it more. PETA is criticized frequently on boards but rarely does the government or media get criticized for the help they have given factory farms. Strange.

I've been on many message boards and vegetarian boards are some of the worst as far as arguing goes. A movement should have unity to be successful and I don't notice vegetarians having any unity on message boards I go on.

Yeah, I think this is why really. In real life, I'm more likely to criticise a company that kills or hurts animals than PETA, but it would be boring to read a forum full of people agreeing that somebody is bad.

I'm more interested in reading about the aspects of vegetarianism that are divisive, because I'm more likely to read an opinion that changes my mind, gives me new information, or causes me to change in some way.

This I imagine is true. I just googled Don Tyson having never heard of him, and he's dead. Not much activism needed there!

Not really. The reason we don't see much criticism on the Don Tyson's of the world other than blurbs here and there is because most of us (entire veg*n community not necessarily this board) are on the same page and any such discussions rapidly turn into a circle jerk. The difference with PETA is it's a more does the ends justify the means type of a debate. Like it or not PETA does color the general public's perception towards the vegan "community" as a whole. I can understand why some don't want that and get ****** at PETA's methods.

My take on it anyway.

What I was trying to say but much more eloquently put.

Why don't we hear more about the good PETA does(such as activist work) or the fact that they've helped many people go vegetarian. PETA killing dogs is obviously a problem, but most of the other controversy is at most a minor problem. I'd rather focus on the major problems like factory farms rather than a minor problem(PETA's "I'd Rather Be Nude" campaign, for instance).

We don't here about it because peta does very, very little good, if any at all. I wouldn't call the rank racism and misogyny that comes from the mouths of peta a "minor" problem.

I understand he died. You can still criticize the company he was involved with. I don't see that happening.
