Linda Brown, who as a girl was at center of Brown vs. Board of Education decision, dies at 76
For those not very familiar with Linda Brown and the SCOTUS case which bears her name, a brief history lesson, which American children are supposed to learn in school:
Brown v. Board was the Supreme Court case in which the decision of the court established that the concept of Separate but Equal was unconstitutional, and this reversed the decision of the earlier Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson, which declared that Separate but Equal WAS constitutional. Plessy v. Ferguson resulted in decades of racist Jim Crow laws (mostly in the former Confederacy, but also elsewhere in the country, such as Kansas), including school segregation in which black children received an inferior education compared to white children, which led to Brown v. Board. The decision on this case upended the country’s racist status quo and many racists and their descendants still have trouble dealing with it.
