A friend of mine who knew him had this to say on her Facebook: "Donald Hall is dead. He was there for some of the biggest moments in my life--when Jane died, Bennington, my thesis, at chemo appointments, through a myriad manuscript rejections, when my book finally got picked up, being my friend when I most needed an older, wiser (hilariously irreverent) someone to be there, showing me how to be a poet (or in my case, try).... I wish I could measure up to the kindness he always showed me. I certainly haven't. I've never come close to his generosity or his courage or his capacity for friendship. I loved him. He probably didn't even know that about me. That hurts the most. He was a great gift God dropped on me. I loved him"
