If Joe Biden because of health reasons had to step down or died ,would Kamala Harris automatically become the president ?

I thought he had cancelled his birthday party because of Delta. But it is outside.
but this is a cool story

did not think this was going to happen. Thought for sure Lucy would pull the football.
Well it still has to get thru the House but I think its chances are good.
Now I wish they would focus on voting rights.

But now Joe Manchin can be like "see, bipartisanship still works!"

I'm pessimistic about democratic reform passing. Republicans won't go for it and neither will many big-money funded democrats. The last thing industry and the ultra rich want is a government that reflects the will of the people on inequality, tax fairness, environmental policy etc

I think it was disappointing to see Biden propose a $2 trillion spend on climate a year ago and then end with a $1 trillion infrastructure bill of which only a small part of that was climate. As far as I know, we aren´t going to get a separate climate change bill? It looks like Biden will be another climate denying President in the style of Obama. Once again I am on the point of giving up on 1.5C as a max temperature increase. China is still building new coal plants. We are still looking likely at 2C-3C.

If Biden actually came out and said "Clearly, we are not delivering on the Paris agreement, but that is because I couldn´t get more past the Senate" I´d have more respect for him, but he is acting as if he is doing enough which he isn´t.

Bill has $7.5 billion for zero- and low-emission buses and ferries, (that´s something, but likely only tens of thousands of buses out of millions of vehicles).

Another $7.5 billion would go to building a nationwide network of plug-in electric vehicle chargers (that´s better than nothing, but it`s only $20 per American, feels a bit low).

Some of this bill has funding for roads and airports. Who knows that may lead to more climate change than the benefits of the above two things.

I am pleasantly surprised he got a $1T thru the senate.

However the house has said that it will only pass it if it's tied to an even larger $3T plan that does include a lot more for climate change. And that bill only happens with budget resolution.

Worst case scenario - both things don't happen.

Best case scenario - Both things happen.

There is also a possilbiity that the $3T plan ends up being something democrats campaign on in 2022.

Stay tuned.

Yesterday in the news.
The Democrate senators tried to get a debate on the voting rights bill -the Republicans shot it down.
So nothing good happened but I feel better know that they tried. I guess during campaigning it might be helpful that they now have all the Republican senators saying on the record that they are against voting rights.

They also went right to work on the next step in infrasctrure, passing a budget resolution for a $3.5T infrastructure bill. Which happened way faster than I thought they could. So next step is the house. Its possible we could have this thing done by September.

So it looks like there are some other climate measures on the table for the budget reconciliation bill (which can be passed by 50/51 votes) and these are clean energy standard & clean energy tax credits which if passed would lead towards an increase in renewable energy for electricity to try to reach a target of 80% less emissions from the electricity sector.

I listened to David Roberts (available below as both audio and written text) below and he says that this reconciliation bill is the best chance to get climate legislation passed for 10 years probably.

This bill would contain something on climate action that´s more meaningful than anything in the infrastructure bill by the sound of it. This is something I didn´t realize before.

He suggests now is a good time to call political representatives and take political action. The clean energy standard & clean energy tax credits are not guaranteed to make it into the bill at all.

I think everyone's surprised with how fast the Taliban is retaking Afghanistan. And it seems like Biden is taking a lot of the blame. But to me it just underscores the futility of trying to prop up the Afghan government. After nearly 20 years of "nation building" and training the Afghan military they can't hold their ground for even a few months without the US military. Would any amount of time be enough to prepare them?

It's a tragedy, especially for Afghan women. But I'm glad Biden had the guts to do what Bush didn't for fear of his legacy, what Obama didn't do for fear of his legacy, what Trump didn't do for....well, probably his electoral prospects. It may hurt Biden short term. It may even cost him re-election or cause him to not run, if Republicans can weaponize it and keep it relevant. But it's the right call, long overdue, and I think history will see it that way as well.

One of my friends was telling me about a news story he had read. ( I have no idea where he got this so take it with a grain of salt.). I'm only repeating it here because it seems possible and optimistic.

the Afghan gov't is hoping that the Taliban will over extend themselves and also leave them selves open to air strikes.
