I got a weird e-mail from the Mayor today. I suppose this qualifies under "misconduct."

Mayor Barry Statement on Extramarital Affair
January 31, 2018

Mayor Megan Barry has released the following statement regarding an extramarital affair:

“Today, I have acknowledged publicly that I have engaged in an extramarital affair with the former head of my security detail.

“I accept full responsibility for the pain I have caused my family and his. I am so sorry to my husband Bruce, who has stood by me in my darkest moments and remains committed to our marriage, just as I am committed to repairing the damage I have done.

“I also must apologize to the people of Nashville who elected me to serve as your mayor. I knew my actions could cause damage to my office and the ones I loved, but I did it anyway. I must hold myself to the highest standard of which the voters deserve to expect. Please know that I’m disappointed in myself but also understand that I’m a human and that I made a mistake.

“In 2015, I was elected to serve as Mayor of Nashville on a platform that included building more affordable housing, improving public education, and promoting better transportation options. We have made progress on these fronts – but there is more to be done. While I regret any distractions that will be caused by my actions, I remain firmly committed to working hard to serve the people of Nashville now and into the future.

“God will forgive me, but the people of Nashville don’t have to. In the weeks and months to come, I will work hard to earn your forgiveness and earn back your trust."

Assuming that's pretty much the full story, it would be peanuts compared to a lot of the other stories of actual harassment and assault recently. There's obviously the power inequality aspect, and in that sense perhaps in the same category (but not necessarily to the same degree of 'wrong') as Bill Clinton's Lewinsky affair.

Well, that's not the full story. There were apparently serious financial irregularities involved. Much of the affair was carried on at taxpayer's expense. For example, the police officer involved supposedly received a substantial amount--one report said just under $1 Million-- in overtime pay during the last four years. And there were significant travel expenses. The Mayor apparently went with him on trips abroad to Paris and Greece, etc.

There is extensive coverage of this in the local newspaper, which has a website. However, the website is set up so that it detects the location of anyone accessing it, and if you are outside the Nashville area, it demands that you subscribe to the newspaper before it will let you read any of the articles.

In the Mayor's defense or at least in mitigation of her behavior, she lost a son during the past year. He died of a drug overdose.

Well the affair part doesn't deserve coverage, the pay offs certainly do, but aren't even mentioned o_O

The story of the affair received national coverage by all the major TV networks, the Washington Post, etc.

And yes, you are right that almost all these stories focussed on the sex aspect, ignoring the money aspect. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is looking into her expenses and the policeman's. The Metro Council (the legislative body here) may form a committee with subpoena power to look into these expenses.

Ironically, several ethics experts have been consulted and some have concluded that the Mayor's conduct may have violated her own ethics rules--rules she promulgated by Executive Order shortly after she first took office.

It's ironic that the website of the local paper (the Tennessean) has a "pay wall" for users/visitors outside the Nashville area. It appears that these other news organizations are too cheap to buy a subscription. If they had they could have read the details of the problematic expenditures of the Mayor and her lover.

By the way, the Mayor maintains that all her expenditures were proper and correct.

This is really depressing. I’ve contributed to Oxfam in the past. I’m sure the organization would never condone something like this, but I’m hesitant about continuing to support them at this time.
They tried to cover it up, and it's coming back to bite them.

I find this the most egregious of all. These guys were supposed to be there to help people in the direst of need, and instead they use that need to use them sexually.

And then, to top it off, this is going to harm countless other people in dire need, because it's going to drive donations down across the board. It won't affect just Oxfam.

I wish there were a hell, because these men belong there.

One of my FB friends just shared this ...

Understandably, she was quite outraged by the concept, especially considering the women working there ...

Ford chief leaves over improper behaviour

The inquiry was conducted by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which said female and African-American employees had been subjected to sexual and racial harassment and found the carmaker retaliated against employees who complained about the harassment or discrimination.

The story of the Nashville Mayor's affair gets weirder and weirder.

The TBI got warrants for the Mayor's and the bodyguard's personal phones. Supposedly at least one of the phones has pictures of a naked woman on it--possibly the Mayor. Supposedly this proves some sort of criminal conduct. (I don't understand this, but this is what is in the newspaper.)

From what I have read, the time stamp on the photos covers times when the security chief was collecting pay for being on duty. The crime would be fraudulently getting paid for "on duty" time when he was actually engaging in sexual intercourse.

Also, I gather that the mayor is claiming that a y nude photos of her were taken without her consent or knowledge. (That of course is yet another issue.)

Yes that is quite correct. But that seems to mean that the bodyguard may have committed a crime. But I don't see how that implicates the Mayor in committing a crime.

If she knew he was fraudulently filling out timecards, and if she is his boss, she would be party to the fraud.

She claims not to be his boss, in that he reports to an official of higher rank in the police department.
