I am glad that it's coming out, but it sure starts feeling overwhelming after a while. I can't even begin to comprehend how awful it must have been for those assaulted, to have to see their abusers thrive all these years.

Nashville's Mayor--the one that had the extra-marital affair with her policeman/bodyguard--resigned today. She had said she would not resign, but I guess she changed her mind. I am not sure why. The city's newspaper, The Tennessean, put out what seemed to me to be a harsh editorial calling on her to resign. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is still investigating her, as is a special committee of the Metro Council. They may or may not find some financial improprieties in relation to the affair.

If she had asked me, I would have recommended that she not resign. But what's done is done.

The Vice Mayor, David Briley, will now take over as Mayor. I do not know much about him, but his family name is prominent in Nashville.

Her resignation was part of the plea agreement she entered into in connection with felony charges arising from the payment of hourly overtime to her security chief for periods of time she was having sex with him (as evidenced by time stamped nude photos he took of her). She's getting off with three years probation, repayment by her to the city of $11,000, and her resignation.

She resigned to avoid prison, which was sensible.

You are right. Much more information in today's newspaper.

Both Ms. Barry and the former police officer pled guilty to felony theft.
She has to repay the city $11,000, which she has already done. The bodyguard has to repay $45,000, which he has not yet done. He will also have his pension scrutinized, and if he owes more money it will be "adjusted" accordingly.

Both received three-year suspended sentences.

The new Mayor Briley is the grandson of Metro-Nashville's first Mayor, Beverly Briley. He will serve until the next Mayoral election on August 1st.

I have mixed feelings about all of this. Because of the plea agreements, we do not have all the facts about what all went on during the affair.

The District Attorney asked the TBI to close the investigation of this matter, which has been done. The Metro Council has a special committee which will continue its investigation.

First, it was reported that the Weinstein Company was going to file for bankruptcy. Then it was reported that a group of largely women investor were buying the company and saving itfrom bankruptcy. Now the BBC is reporting the company is filing for bankruptcy. I am thoroughly confused.

Weinstein Company files for bankruptcy

In the continuing saga of Nashville's former Mayor, Megan Barry, I learned two more things today. One is that Megan and her husband Bruce have an open marriage, so infidelity is no big deal.

And former Vice Mayor David Briley, now Acting Mayor, has had serious heart troubles and had a quadruple bypass. This convinced him to become a vegan.

In the still continuing saga of Nashville's former Mayor, Megan Barry, Barry has about a $330,000 war chest she was intending to use to run again for Mayor in 2019. Now that these prospects have evaporated, Barry has decided to offer (partial) refunds to people who contributed to her campaign. She is offering about 50 cents on the dollar rebates to contributors who send her an e-mail requesting the rebate.

Traditionally, such rebates are not offered. Politicians will simply keep the money to use in some future race, or to subsidize the campaigns of their political "friends," or whatever. Barry's offer to rebate back the money in her campaign chest seems to testify to her realization that her political life is over. Still, I think it is a fairly decent thing to do.
