The Pope resigns

Yes.

How long does it take to announce the winner of "Next Top Pope"?

Nice he's not the typically expected Europe-based cardinal. Not nice that he's a homophobic prat like the rest of 'em.

Pope Francis I of Argentina.
Per wiki:
"Bergoglio became a member of the Commission on Latin American and the Family Council.
As Cardinal, Bergoglio became known for personal humility, doctrinal conservatism and a commitment to social justice.
A simple lifestyle has contributed to his reputation for humility. He lives in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop's residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation, and he reportedly cooks his own meals."

The Pope took the name after St Francis of Assissi, the founder of the Jesuits. St Francis's traditional prayer is maybe a good one for the world now. (I don't know how to make spoilers work in mobile, or I would spoiler the prayer, sorry!)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

If you've been baptized Catholic, are a dude, and not at least 80-years old, you can be pope.

I'm surprised, but I think this was a wise choice.
I totally agree. Although no longer Catholic myself, I was raised in a very Catholic family, and the priest I liked the best was a Jesuit (he was Irish.)

The vatican calls the choice of Francis for a name is "stunning." I hope this pope remains humble and continues to serve the poor, which seems to have been his focus (from what I have googled today.) I'm excited for the many latino Catholics especially today. :)

Yes, the South American church has tended to be the part of the church most focused on social justice, so I'm happy to see a pope coming out of that tradition.

Well this pope appears to be very strongly anti-homosexual rights.

I doubted that we'd get a pro-homosexual rights pope, but someone who is more mild on the issue would have been nice.
