Ukraine

This may be the worst article I've ever read from a columnist before. Of course Russia would suffer, but other oil exporters and oil companies would suffer as well. No basic understanding of how this works. Apparently attacking a country's economy and causing misery to their civilian population is cool these days.

It was always cool. We didn't really trade with Nazi Germany in the midst of WWII.

Russian state television is sharing images of what they claim to be MH-17 being attacked. But they appear to be badly faked*. Perhaps this is a propaganda move since NATO is claiming Russia is pouring more troops and weapons into Ukraine.

Russia is also planning to send strategic bombers over the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition, Russia has stopped future cooperation for securing their nuclear warheads.

If we're lucky, this will only end with Russia screwing itself over.

* That site goes into a rather more complex debunking. An easier debunking would be the relative size of the plane compared to the ground below. If it is a satellite image, then one simply has to look at the perspective - low earth satellites are still quite far above the ground. The plane is simply too big in the picture.

As long as it makes the Russians look bad, das_nut will believe it. You'll keep this thread going for as long as possible. Why haven't we had an investigation into MH-17 yet and when will it happen?

It's the wrong markings, the wrong size, and the proportions are wrong. It's fake.

Also, there is several ongoing investigations into the crash. The two major ones are being carried out by the Dutch, for obvious reasons.

You don't seem very informed on this.

As for the thread going on, this is an ongoing event. This news is current.

All I see are pictures on that web site. Maybe the pictures are a fake? I follow the news on a regular basis, and almost nothing has been mentioned about the plane incident for months now.

The nuke article was reported by, I believe, the AP.
Pictures hit at least one major tech news website.
Investigation was reported on awhile ago.

And the entire Russian situation was reported on during Putin/Obama meeting in Beijing.

This popped up in my news feed today:

Putin has doubled military spending in the past decade, and the latest budget calls for still more increases over the next two years. The same budget will cut spending on health care, education and pensions.

- NPR news

It doesn't bode well that Putin thinks military spending needs to increase.

Wasn't military spending what brought down the Soviet Union? Maybe the US should consider wiping the dust off of SDI.

I don't see "bringing down" Russia as a goal. I'd prefer if they would grow up and play nicely with their neighbors, TBH.

Maybe Europe could throw in a few bucks as well.
Indeed. As could other allies. (They may be a bit wary after that ever more expensive F35 fiasco though!)

Suddenly playing nicely now seems unlikely.

Talking Turkey » CounterPunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names
Russia and Turkey recently had a major deal that was unexpected. The Russians are the big winners, and the United States the big losers in this. Behind the scenes the US government is likely throwing a big temper tantrum over this.

Wasn't military spending what brought down the Soviet Union?
Oil prices were dropping around that time and Russian oil production was dropping as well. It could have been several factors involved at one time, but it was certainly more than military spending.

Kiev, Ukraine (CNN)Russian military forces and equipment have entered Ukraine, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk says, according to a report from Ukraine's state-run media on Monday.

"I have just spoken with the national defense and security council secretary. Ukrainian military intelligence confirm the fact military personnel and equipment have been transferred from Russia to Ukraine," the prime minister is quoted as saying.
